현대시에 나타난 동물 제재 연구

국문 초록

이 논문은 현대시에 나타난 동물 제재의 양상을 살펴보는 목적을 지닌다. 동물은 세계의 수많은 문화에서 역사적으로 오랫동안 이용된 상징이다. 그 중 시에서 동물 제재를 활용하는 방식의 특이성을 살펴보고 의미를 구명하고자 하였다. 동물은 인간이 아니지만 인간과 비슷한 성향을 가진 존재로 읽혀 왔다. 인간은 동물을 사육하고 먹고 실험하는 등 활용하면서도 이들을 흥미로워하고 사랑한다. 이러한 복합적인 애증의 관계는 문학에도 중요하게 반영되어 왔다. 이를 전제로 본고에서는 김기택, 황인숙, 권혁웅 세 시인의 동물을 제재로 한 시의 면면을 살펴보았다. 김기택의 시에서는 인간의 육식 행위를 ‘고기’가 아닌 ‘동물’을 먹는 행위라는 데 방점을 두고 윤리적 성찰을 끌어낸다. 황인숙의 시에서는 고양이를 중심으로 하여 인간의 삶을 동물과의 ‘동거’에서 ‘공존’의 차원으로 확장시킨다. 권혁웅의 시에서는 ‘동물’ 기표와 상상력이 결합된 서사가 수사적 효과를 배가시킨다. 표현의 응축과 집약의 산물인 시에서 지속적으로 활용되는 제재라면 시인이 선택한 이유가 분명히 있고, 그것으로부터 파급되는 미학적 의미 또한 여러 갈래로 나뉘게 된다. 따라서 시인이 동물 제재를 어떻게 활용하고 있는지 살펴보는 일은 고유한 시적 개성을 파악하는 방법이자 동물과의 관계에서 파악되는 인간에 대한 고민을 발견하는 과정이기도 하다. 이는 결국 문학의 본질에 가닿는 작업이라는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the aspects of animal materials shown in modern poetry. Animals are old historic symbols that have been used in numerous cultures around the world. Especially among them, this study tries to examine the characteristic of how they utilize animal materials and clarify its significance. Although animals are not humans, they have been considered as beings with tendencies similar to humans. While they make use of animals by breeding, eating and experimenting them, humans have interest in animals and give love to them. Such a complex relationship of love and hatred has been significantly reflected on literature. On the premise, the various sides of poems based on animal materials of the three poets, Kim Ki-taek, Hwang In-sook and Kwon Hyuk-woong. In the poems of Kim Ki-taek, he derives ethical reflection from the human act of eating meat, focusing on the act of eating not ‘meat’ but an ‘animal’. In the poems of Hwang In-sook, centering around cats, she extends human life from ‘cohabitation’ to ‘coexistence’ with animals. In the poems of Kwon Hyuk-woong, the combination of ‘animal’ symbols and human imagination comes up with abundant narrations and adds to its rhetorical effect. In the poem which is the condensation of expressions and product of integration, if it is the writing material used consistently, there’s an obvious reason why the poet adopted it. And aesthetic meaning spread from it should be divided into several parts. Therefore, to examine how a poet utilizes the animal materials is not only how to comprehend poetic personality but also to search into various human perspectives and attitudes towards animals. The importance of concerning about humans through poetry can be found in that it is the work of getting to the essence of literature.
