IAPC(Institute for Advancement of Philosophy for Children)
The idea of teaching philosophy to children became a much more systematic process in the 1970s, largely as a result of American philosopher Matthew Lipman and his program developed at the Institute for Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC). Lipman’s ‘philosophy for children’ consisted of methodically developing educational curriculum, based upon age and differing stages of learning, upon which training programs for the curriculum’s instructors would be developed. Such a process has, over the years, become most successfully disseminated on a worldwide scale, as the program is made available in no less than 40 different languages.
On the other hand, some critics such as Gareth Matthews have pointed out the limitations of Lipman’s IAPC-developed curriculum and its standardized manuals, suggesting an alternative of teaching philosophy to children by utilizing ‘dialogue’ as the centerpiece, without regard to the IAPC curriculum. Matthews’ approach was thus termed ‘philosophy with children.’ In response, Lipman belittled ‘philosophy with children’ as a small offshoot of his own ‘philosophy for children.’ He added that the process of conducting dialogue with a child based on his/her own philosophical ideation, without regard to a systematic curriculum, may fulfill the purpose of encouraging children to become philosophers but would not be effective as a means for a philosophy education program.
Examination into the actual curriculum developed by Lipman reveals that it takes the form of literary novels, yet there has often been criticism that his philosophical novels lack literary value. Further, because they were devised to improve a specific aspect of a child’s thinking skills, they ended up limited in appeal which, in turn, does not peak the interest of children. Lipman, however, did not see these qualities as a problem, stating that his philosophical novels had a clear educational purpose of stimulating philosophical debate, which is more befitting to the overall goal of philosophical education than known literary works which contain within neither philosophical queries nor any models of inquisitive thinking. As a result, Lipman was against the utilization of literature in philosophy education for children.
The current paper strongly recommends the utilization of literature in the education of philosophy for children. There are plenty of literary works, especially those considered classics, that deal with metaphysical themes of time, space, or identity, encapsulating ideas, such as logical themes related to searching for meaning or nonformal logic or ethics- related themes that deal with moral choices and judgment of actions. The current paper will lay out a teaching plan for instructors of philosophy for children that utilizes the classic novel Tuck Everlasting, specifically as a tool for teaching the difficult philosophical concept of ‘death’ to young children. The paper will then attempt to show that Lipman’s ‘philosophy for children’ and Matthews’ ‘philosophy with children’ can be mutually reinforcing for each other as opposed to being offshoots or in competition with each other.
