[초등영어교사 전문성] 초등학교 영어놀이터 공간혁신 사례에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

최근 의사소통을 위한 공적 영어 교육 기능을 강화하고 지역 및 교육 여건에 따른 교육 편차를 최소화하기 위해 교육 당국의 정책적 노력이 꾸준히 모색 되어오고 있다. 교육부는 ‘초등학교 영어 내실화 계획(2019)’을 발표하고 이 같은 노력을 더욱 적극적으로 추진하겠다고 하였다. 이에 즐겁게 놀면서 영어를 배울 수 있는 ‘초등학교 영어놀이터’ 조성을 제안하고 정책적으로 확산 실시하고 있다. 초등학교 영어놀이터는 올해 처음 시행되는 교육부 지원 사업이다. 신규 구축 또는 교내 기존시설을 활용해 영어놀이터 공간을 마련한다. 학생의 성장과 배움을 촉진하는 학습·놀이·쉼의 공간이자, 학교·지역사회에서 영어교육 정보 공유와 발표가 가능한 공간으로 조성한다는 방침이다. 이를 구체화하기 위해 ‘초등학교 영어과 교육과정 학습지원 방안연구-영어놀이터 운영 모델 구성·지원을 중심으로(교육부, 2020)’를 배포하여 구체적인 도움을 제공하는 등 적극적인 노력을 기울이고 있다. 이러한 흐름은 교육부가 추진하고 있는 사용자 참여 공간 혁신 사업(2019)의 취지와도 맞물려있다. 학교 공간 혁신을 통해 미래교육을 위해 놀이와 학습, 휴식과 창의적 활동 등이 가능한 열린 공간을 만든다. 영어놀이터 또한 사용자들의 의견을 수렴하여 학교 특성에 맞게 공간을 구성하고, 학생들이 즐겁게 영어를 접할 수 있는 다양한 프로그램 운영을 목표로 한다. 본 연구는 천안 지역의 한 초등학교에서 영역단위 공간 혁신 사업의 일환으로 진행된 영어놀이터 공간 혁신 사례이다. 사용자, 촉진자, 공간혁신 연구 전문기관, 교육청이 함께 참여하여 진행되었다. 발표자는 이 프로젝트에 공간혁신 교육 촉진자이자 영어교육 전문가로서 참여하였다. 현재는 기본 설계를 마치고 실시 설계를 진행하고 있다. 사용자 참여 설계를 통해 공간에 대한 인식을 살펴보고 공간에 대한 다양한 활용 가능성을 이끌어 낼 수 있다. 사용자들의 요구를 반영한 영어 놀이터 공간을 설계하는 과정은 매우 역동적인 활동이다. 학생들의 영어놀이터 심상 스케치를 통해 보았을 때 학생들은 누구보다 사전 연구에서 제시한 학습, 놀이, 휴식과 쉼의 영역이 중첩된 공간의 필요성에 대해 직관적으로 공감하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 이제 막 개념이 제안되고 실행에 돌입한 만큼 아직 다양한 측면에서 점검 되어야 할 부분이 많다. 따라서 사용 프로그램을 구체화하는 과정에 학습자들의 참여와 반응이 더욱 빈번하게 적극적으로 반영될 필요가 있다. 또한 교사들의 영어교육 맥락 전문가와 개인 학습자의 영어 경험 설계자로서의 전문성이 요구된다. 이를 바탕으로 영어 공간 혁신과 영어 학습 내실화를 균형 있게 실현하기 위해서는(Byers & Lippman, 2018) 교사들의 적극적인 참여가 더욱 중요하게 요구된다 하겠다.

영문 초록

Recently, policy efforts by the education authorities have been steadily sought to strengthen public English education functions for communication and minimize educational deviations depending on regional and educational conditions. The Education Ministry announced its plan to improve English proficiency at elementary schools (2019) and said it would push for such efforts more actively. In response, the government has proposed creating an elementary school English playground where students can enjoy themselves and learn English. The English Playground for Elementary Schools is a support project by the Education Ministry, which will be implemented for the first time. It will provide a space for English immersion by utilizing new construction or existing facilities on campus. The plan is to create a space for learning, playing, and relaxing that promotes the growth and learning of students, as well as a space for English education, information sharing, and presentation in schools and local communities. To properly implement this, the ministry is actively making efforts to provide specific help (to school districts? to schools?) by distributing the Study on Supporting Learning of Elementary School English Curriculum-Composition and Support of English Playground Operation Model (Ministry of Education, 2020). This trend is also in line with the purpose of the User Participation Space Innovation Project(2019) being pursued by the Ministry of Education. Through school space innovation, it creates an open space where play, learning, relaxation, and creative activities can be done for future education. The English playground also aims to collect opinions from users and organize the space according to a specific school’s characteristics, and operate various programs where students can enjoy English. This study is an example of English playground space innovation conducted by an elementary school in Cheonan area as part of a partial unit space innovation project. Users, facilitators, institutions specializing in space innovation research, and education offices participated together. The presenter participated in the project as a facilitator of space innovation in education and an expert in English education. Currently, the basic design has been completed and the working design stage is in progress. User-participating design allows us to look at the perception of space and derive various possibilities for use of space. The process of designing an English playground that reflects the needs of users is a very dynamic activity. Judging from the students English playground mental sketches, it was confirmed that the students were more intuitively sympathetic to the need for a space overlaid with areas of learning, play, and relaxation than anyone else as suggested by the preliminary study. However, as the concept has just been proposed and put into practice, there are still many aspects that need to be checked from various aspects. Therefore, more frequent and active learners participation and responses need to be reflected in the process of applying programs. It also requires teachers English education, contextual experts, and individual learners expertise as English experience designers. Based on this, active participation of teachers is extremely important in order to manage both English space innovation and English learning in a balanced manner (Byers & Lippman, 2018).
