카네기분류를 활용한 한국 자연계 연구중심대학 분류 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 카네기분류를 활용하여 국내 자연계 연구중심대학을 분류하고자 하였다. 카네기분류는 대학 기관을 단위로 미국의 대학유형을 구분하고 이중 연구중심대학을 3개 유형으로 분류하고 있다. 본 연구의 분류 방법론은 기본적으로 카네기분류의 방법론을 활용하였으나, 대학 기관 수준보다 한 단계 낮은 단계인 계열 수준에서 분류를 시도하고 있으므로 분석에 포함된 지표, 연구중심대학 분류기준은 국내 상황에 따라 적절히 조정되었다. 본 연구가 기존 국내 대학유형 및 연구중심대학 분류 연구들과 비교할 때 특징적인 점은 계열 수준에서 연구중심대학을 분류하였고, 대학정보공시제 자료에 근거하여 객관성이 높으며, 분류 절차가 명확하여 유사연구를 수행하기 쉽다는 점이다. 또한 일반적인 국내 대학유형 분류는 다수의 조건들을 복합적으로 고려하는 반면, 본 연구의 분류방식은 분석에 포함된 11개의 지표들을 ‘개인당 연구활동’과 ‘종합적 연구활동’의 두 요인으로 구분한 후 두 요인의 역동성에 근거하여 단일 기준(연구활동지수)에 의해 유형을 분류하고 있다는 점에서도 차이가 있다. 본 연구 결과, 국내 자연계 연구중심대학들은 3개 유형으로 구분될 수 있었으며 구분된 집단들 간에는 연구에 포함된 11개 지표에서 대부분 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타나 자연계 연구중심대학에 대한 본 연구의 분류 방법이 타당한 것으로 확인되었다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to classify Korean research universities of science fields. The methodology of this study is basically based on the Carnegie classification. The Carnegie classification is classifying methodology for university institutes. On the contrary, the classifying level of this study is academic disciplines. The indicators of model and standard for classification also differ from Carnegie classification. The important differences of this study from past researches for universities classification fulfilled in Korea are as belows: (1) This study attempt to classify universities at the level of academic disciplines (science fields). (2) This study has objectivity and security because of using dataset from national statistical system for higher education. (3) The classifying standard is one, standardized distance estimated from 2 factors (aggregate level of research activity, per-capita research activity). On the contrary, other classifying methodologies for higher education use combination of various indicators. This study outcome shows Korean research universities of science fields can be classified to 3 type and there is statistically significant difference in 11 indicators related research by group. Thus, The classification methodology of this study for science fields can be evaluated as valid.
