국문 초록

김윤식(金允植, 1936~2018)은 2001년 퇴직을 맞이한 뒤 ‘한국근대문학사’의 새로운 서술이라는 목표 아래 ‘글쓰기론 3부작’ 저술 활동으로 나아간 바 있다. 잘 알려진 바와 같이 2003년 『일제 말기 한국 작가의 일본어 글쓰기론』 출판으로 포문을 연 ‘글쓰기’론은 『해방공간 한국 작가의 민족문학 글쓰기론』(2006)을 거쳐 『일제말기 한국인 학병세대의 체험적 글쓰기론』(2007)으로 갈무리된다. 실로 다대多大한 문제의식과 쟁점을 함의하고 있는 각각의 ‘글쓰기(론)’은 ‘근대’라는 관념을 전제로 성립 가능한 ‘문학(론)’과는 상당한 격차를 드러낸 저작이라 할 수 있다. 김윤식에게 있어 ‘글쓰기(론)’이란 ‘국학’을 한다는 선입견에 휩싸여 ‘국민국가nation-state’라는 기틀을 준거로 한국의 문학사를 서술해왔던 이전의 연구 경향을 스스로 탈피하기 위하여 요청된 것이기 때문이다. 그가 일제 말기의 ‘이중어 글쓰기 공간(1942~1945)’과 ‘해방공간(1945~1948)’에 우선 주목하게 된 이유도 바로 여기에 있다. 단적으로 이때 사용된 ‘공간’이라는 개념만 하더라도 ‘국가’로서의 주체적 작용력이 미치지 못한 장소라는 의미로 사용된 것이다. 기존의 문학사에서 결락된 가장 약한 고리를 연구의 토대로 삼음으로써 김윤식은 ‘문학사’ 개념 자체를 새로이 갱신하고자 했던 것으로 여겨진다. 이러한 문제의식이 비단 21세기라는 문턱을 기점으로 형성된 것이 아니라 현실 사회주의 몰락을 전후한 시기에서부터 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 누적된 것임을 주목할 필요가 있다. 이른바 ‘역사의 종언’을 목격한 이후 한국의 근대문학사를 ‘연구자’의 입장에서가 아니라 ‘표현자’의 입장에서 분석해야 함을 강조한 것도 이러한 맥락과 무관치 않다. 요컨대 김윤식은 ‘문학사’를 정위定位하고자 ‘국민국가’를 준거로 작성된 ‘문학’ 개념을 ‘해체’하기 위하여 그 스스로 ‘글쓰기(론)’을 수행해나간 것이다. 아직 ‘글쓰기론 3부작’의 공과를 비판하는 작업은 본격적인 궤도를 마련하지 못한 실정이라 할 수 있다. 문학사 연구에 평생을 바친 대가가 선보인 ‘말년의 양식’과 그 의미를 곱씹기 위한 예비적 단계의 일환으로 이 글은 김윤식의 텍스트를 ‘결을 거슬러’ 독해하는 작업을 수행함으로써 ‘글쓰기론’의 ‘지향’을 추려내는 일에 집중하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

After retiring in 2001, Kim Yoon-shik(1936~2018) started work on his ‘Writings Trilogy’ with the goal of telling modern Korean literary history in a new way. The trilogy commenced with Japanese Writings of Korean Authors in the Late Colonial Period(2003), continued in Nationalist Writings of Korean Authors in the Liberation Period(2006), and concluded with Autobiographical Writings of the Korean Student Conscripts in the Late Colonial Period(2007). Each encompassing a plethora of concerns and controversial points, these works reveal a significant gap between Kim Yoon-shik’s theory of ‘writings’ and the theory of ‘literature’ premised on the concept of ‘modernity.’ To Kim Yoon-shik, this work on ‘(the theory of) writings’ was necessary as a means of escape from the trends of previous research which, swept up in the presupposition of literature as a study of nation, narrated Korean literary history within the frame of the ‘nation-state.’ The reason for Kim Yoon-shik’s interest in the late colonial period’s ‘bilingual writing space’ (1942-1945) and the later ‘liberation space’ (1945-1948) can also be found here. Even the concept of ‘space’ in these terms is used to refer to places unreachable by the state’s influence on subjectivity. In taking those writings whose omission constituted the weak link in previous literary histories as the basis of his research, Kim Yoon-shik seems to have been trying to update the concept of literary history itself. It must also be noted that these concerns had been gathering not merely since the beginning of the 21st century, but from around the time of the collapse of socialism. Kim Yoon-shik’s insistence, after witnessing the so-called ‘end of history,’ that modern literary history must be analyzed from the perspective not of the researcher but of the ‘expresser’ (pyohyeonja) is not unrelated to this context. In short, he undertook his own theory of ‘writing’ in order to properly orient literary history and ‘deconstruct’ the concept of ‘literature’ premised on the ‘nation-state.’ There is not yet an established path for critique of the accomplishments and failures of the ‘writings trilogy.’ As a preliminary step in digesting the significance of the ‘late style’ presented by a towering figure who devoted his life to the study of literary history, this article reads Kim Yoon-shik’s texts ‘against the grain’ in an attempt to discern the ‘direction’ of the theory of ‘writing.’
