의미인의 문학사, 그 체계와 의의

국문 초록

이 글은 김윤식(1936~2018)의 문학사 연구와 관련해 그리고 거대한 학문 체계와 관련해, 그 모든 것의 주춧돌 같은 형태로 『한국문학사』가 자리하고 있다는 판단 하에 『한국문학사』의 체계와 그 의의를 세 가지 측면에서 고찰하였다. 먼저, 패배한 외국 이론과 주변문화론을 극복하는 방법과 관련된 측면이다. 김윤식은 13세기의 사대주의, 그리고 개화기 이후의 맹목적인 서구추수주의로 인해 한국은 문화적 변방으로 전락했다고 판단하면서, 이러한 주변문화적 사고가 1970년대 한국 문학에서도 여전히 만연하고 있는데, 그것이 외국문학 전공자들에 의한 한국 문학 폄하 현상이라 비판한다. 이를 극복하기 위해 김윤식은 문화적 ‘굴절’에 주목하고, ‘한 문화를 수용하는 토양의 성질’ 즉 주체적인 문화 수용의 입장에서 한국문학에 접근하면서 한국문학은 세계문학의 한 요소가 되어야 한다고 강조한다. 다음, 영정조 시대 기점설, 그리고 개별문학으로서의 한국문학과 관련된 측면이다. 김윤식은 근대화=서구화라는 등식에 의해 한국 근대문학의 기점을 개화기로 잡는 것을 비판한다. 개별, 보편, 특수라는 변증법적 인식에 기초해 김윤식은 한국적 특수성으로서의 근대문학에 주목하고, 한국 근대문학의 기점을 한민족의 자체 내의 모순을 표현하는 언어의식(근대의식)이 대두된 영정조 시대로 설정한다. 이러한 기점 설정에 의해 한국문학은 서구 문학, 일본 문학과는 다른 특수성을 지닌 개별문학으로 정립되고, 그 결과 주변문화론을 극복할 수 있는 계기를 마련한다. 마지막으로 의미인으로서의 문학사이다. 당대 사회의 구조적 모순에 절망한 의미인으로서의 문학사가가 사회 모순에 문학적으로 응전하는 방식을 추동하기 위해 전사로서의 과거의 문학적 집적물에 주목하면서, 사회의 총체성을 구현하는 문학이라는 입장에서 각 시대의 문학적 특성에 해당하는 의미망을 구축한다. 그리고 이 의미망에 의해 예외적 개인으로서의 작가와 유효한 작품에 대해 ‘문학사는 실체가 아닌 형태’라는 입장에서 가치 판단을 내린다. 이것이 의미인으로서의 문학사이다.

영문 초록

In relation to the study of literary history by Kim Yoon-shik(1936-2018), and in relation to his huge academic system, this article examined the system and significance of The History of Korean Literature in three respects. First, it is the aspect related to how to overcome the defeated foreign theory and marginal cultural theory. Judging that Korea was reduced to a cultural upheaval due to the 13th century toadyism and blind westernism after the enlightenment period, Kim Yoon-shik criticizes such marginal cultural thinking as a phenomenon still rampant in Korean literature in the 1970s, which is disparaging Korean literature by foreign literature majors. To overcome this, Kim Yoon-shik pays attention to the cultural reflection. He approaches Korean literature from the perspective of ‘the nature of the soil that embraces one culture,’ namely self-contained cultural acceptance. And he emphasizes that Korean literature should be an element of world literature. Next, it is related to the theory of starting point of Yeong Jeongjo period, and Korean literature as an independence literature. Kim Yoon-shik criticizes the marking the beginning of modern Korean literature as a floral period, through the equation of modernization: westernization. Based on the dialectical perception of individual, universal and special, Kim Yoon-shik pays attention to modern literature as a Korean speciality, and sets the foundation of modern Korean literature into the era of Yeong Jeongjo expressing in language the contradictions within the Korean people themselves. By setting such a starting point, Korean literature is established as an independence literature with a speciality different from Western literature and Japanese literature. Lastly, it is the literary history as a meaning person. A literary historian as a meaning person desperate for social contradictions of the day pays attention to the literary aggregates of the past to respond to social contradictions in a literary way, and establishes a semantic network corresponding to the literary characteristics of each era from the standpoint of literature that embodies the general nature of society. And by this semantic network, he make a value judgment about writers as exceptional individuals and valid works from the standpoint of ‘the literary history is not a substance but a form.’ This is the history of literature as a meaning person.
