국문 초록

나도향의 첫 장편소설인 『환희』는 지금까지 나도향의 과도한 낭만주의적 성향을 드러내는 미숙한 작품으로 오인되어 왔다. 한편 『환희』는 안석영이 처음으로 장편소설 삽화를 맡게 된 작품이기도 하지만, 지금까지 단편적으로만 언급되어 왔을 뿐, 작품과의 연관성 속에서 깊이있게 논의된 바가 없다. 본고에서는 나도향의 소설을 안석영의 삽화와 함께 분석함으로써, 『환희』가 당시 독자 대중에게 던졌을 충격을 글과 삽화의 이중적 차원에서 보다 면밀하게 파악해 보고자 했다. 특히 첫 회에 등장하는 혜숙의 초상이 지닌 파격적 의미에 대해 분석하는 것을 통해 소설과 삽화 속 여성 이미지의 의미에 대해 새롭게 접근해 볼 수 있었는데, 나도향은 ‘묘사’를 통해, 안석영은 ‘삽화’를 통해 신여성의 ‘맨 얼굴’을 드러내고 있다고 보았다. 여성 인물이 하나의 개념이 아니라, 원근법적인 관찰의 대상으로 묘사되고, 그려지는 것 자체가 인식론적인 장의 전도를 보여주는 것이며, 그러한 전도 속에서 내면을 지닌 여성이 비로소 출현하게 된 것이다. 이 여성 인물은 외모에 있어서도 또 그 내면 풍경에 있어서도 서양의 작품들에 영향을 받은, 혼종적인 존재였음 또한 확인할 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 여성 인물의 표현이 결국 백조의 동인이었던 이 두 젊은 예술가들의 초상이기도 했음을 논구하고자 했다.

영문 초록

The first full-length novel by Na Dohyang, “Hwanhui,” has been misunderstood as an immature work that reveals Na Dohyang’s excessive romantic and idealistic tendencies. “Hwanhui” is also the first work in which An Seokyoung takes on the role of illustrating a full-length novel, but so far, it has only been briefly mentioned without in-depth discussion in relation to the novel. In this paper, I aimed to closely examine the impact “Hwanhui” must have had on readers at the time by analyzing Na Dohyang’s novel alongside An Seokyoung’s illustrations. Specifically, through an analysis of the radical meaning contained in the portrayal of Hyesuk, who appears in the first episode, I sought to gain a new understanding of the meaning of the female images in the novel and illustrations. Na Dohyang is seen to reveal the ‘bare face’ of the new woman through ‘description,’ while An Seokyoung exposes it through ‘illustrations.’ The female characters are portrayed not as a ‘concept’ but as subjects of the law of perspective, showing a phenomenological inversion in the ways of perception. Through this inversion, women with inner selves finally emerge. It is also evident that these female characters were influenced by Western works both in appearance and in terms of their inner landscape, indicating a hybrid existence. Finally, I aimed to argue that the representation of these female characters ultimately mirrors the portraits of the two young artists of colonial Joseon.
