국문 초록

본고에서는 한국계 미국인인 그레이스 M. 조의 회고록(memoir)인 『전쟁 같은 맛』을 대상으로 여성의 광기에 대한 다른 사유의 가능성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 광기에 대한 이분법적 사유, 즉 억압과 저항의 표출로서 광기를 호명하는 방식이 결과적으로 ‘미친 여자’라는 존재 자체를 끝내 외면하게 하는 귀결에 주목하였다. 『전쟁 같은 맛』을 기지촌 출신으로 백인 남성과 결혼한 후 미국에 이주하여 끝내 ‘미친 여자’로 생을 마감하게 되는 ‘하군자’ 씨를 둘러싼 문화기술지로 보고 장애학적 관점에서 논의해보고자 하였다. 구체적으로는 1990년대 이후 한국문학, 『새의 선물』, 『82년생 김지영』과 같은 여성서사에서 등장하기 시작한 질병으로서의 광기의 서사화 양상과의 비교를 통해, 조현병이라는 질병의 이름으로 포착되는 이주 여성의 삶에 미친 젠더와 인종 그리고 그 이면에 은폐된 계급과 섹슈얼리티의 영향 관계를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 은유화되어 배면으로 지워지는 여성 광기의 실재 자체에 대한 관심을 환기하고자 했으며, 회고록 형태의 쓰기 테크놀로지에 기반한 『전쟁 같은 맛』을 통해 그 가능성과 한계를 가늠해보고자 하였다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I examined the possibility of a different understanding of women’s madness by focusing on the memoir, A Taste Like War by Grace M. Cho, a Korean-American. I focused on the fact that the dichotomous understanding of madness, that is, the way madness is called as an expression of oppression and resistance, ends up ultimately turning away from the “mad woman” herself rather than approaching her. I also viewed A Taste Like War as a ethnography surrounding “Ha Gun-ja, ” who married a white man from a military camp town, immigrated to the United States, and ended up ending her life as a “mad woman, ” and discussed gender and race from a disability studies perspective. Specifically, through comparison with the narrative aspects of madness as a disease that began to appear in Korean literature since the 1990s, such as A Gift from the Bird and Kim Ji-young, Born 1982, this study examined the influence of gender, race, and the class and sexuality hidden behind it on the lives of immigrant women captured under the name of the disease called schizophrenia. Through this, the study aimed to draw attention to the reality of women’s madness itself, which is metaphorized and erased to the background, and to gauge its possibilities and limitations through A Taste Like War, which is based on the writing technique of memoir.
