친일을 거부당한 친일문사 현룡과김사량의 삼파(三巴)의 격투 : 전쟁-규율화 체제를 통해 본 김사량의 ｢천마｣

국문 초록

본 논문은 김사량의 ｢천마｣를 내선일체의 새로운 국면이었던 전쟁-규율화 체제를 통하여 살펴본다. ｢천마｣의 주인공 현룡은 성격파탄의 친일 문사이지만 그의 문제성은 친일 그 자체에 있다기보다는 그의 야만적인 신체로 인해 친일을 거부당했다는 것에 있다. 그의 야만적인 신체는 내선일체의 실질적 목표였던 ‘일본 병력-되기’라는 과제에 적합하지 않았기에, 아무리 일본인이 되고 싶어했더라도 일본인이 될 수 없었다. 이러한 현룡의 존재는 역으로 내선일체가 목표로 한 것이 실질적으로는 조선인의 일본인화라기보다는 일본 병력화였음을 반증하며, 또한 전쟁-규율화 체제가 요구하는 복종적 신체야말로 근대 문명이 만들어내고자 한 새로운 인간 유형임을 반증한다. 여기에서 현룡이라는 인물이 지닌 문제성은 바로 전쟁-규율화의 문턱을 넘지 못한 야만성에 있다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 이 지점에서 김사량은 그를 지식인이자 민중의 한 사람으로 이해하게 되는데, 이 이중적 모습을 그려내기 위해 김사량은 그 스스로 밝히고 있듯이 삼파(三巴)로 나뉘어 피범벅이 되는 격투를 나누도록 할 수밖에 없었다. ‘현룡을 비판하는 김사량’과 ‘현룡을 이해하고자 하는 따듯한 마음을 지닌 김사량’이 현룡을 사이에 두고 격투를 벌이는 것이다. 이러한 격투를 통해 김사량은 현룡에 대한 오리엔탈리즘적 시각을 벗어나, 야만으로서 살아가야 하는 존재의 슬픔과 비애를 그려내고 야만으로서의 부정성을 긍정할 수 있게 된다. 그런 점에서 ｢천마｣라는 작품은 근대 문명이 만들어낸 수많은 야만들이 어떻게 말하는가라는 차원에서 유의미한 접근을 제시해줄 수 있다고 생각된다.

영문 초록

This paper examines Kim Sa-Ryang’s Cheonma through the war-regulation system, which was a new phase of the Korean-Japanese unity. Hyeon-ryong, the main character of Cheonma, is a pro-Japanese writer, but his problem lies not in being pro-Japanese per se, but in being rejected as being pro-Japanese due to his barbaric body. Because his barbaric body was not suitable for the task of becoming a Japanese soldier, which was the clear policy goal of Korean-Japanese unity, he could not become Japanese no matter how much he wanted to become one. The existence of such a Hyeon-ryong conversely proves that the goal of the Korean-Japanese unity was not to Japaneseize the Korean people but to transform them into Japanese soldiers, and also that the obedient body required by the war-discipline system is the new type of human being that modern civilization seeks to create. In other words, it can be said that the problematic nature of the character Hyeon-ryong lies in his barbarism, which does not cross the threshold of war-regulation. And at this point, Kim Sa-ryang came to understand him as both an intellectual and a person of the people. In order to portray this dual appearance, as Kim Sa-ryang himself revealed, he had no choice but to divide himself into three factions and engage in a bloody fight. ‘Kim Sa-ryang, who criticizes Hyeon-ryong,’ and ‘Kim Sa-ryang, who has a warm heart and wants to understand Hyeon-ryong,’ are fighting over Hyeon-ryong. Through this fight, Kim Sa-ryang breaks away from the Orientalist view of Hyeon-ryong and not only discovers the sadness of being forced to live as a barbarian, but also affirms the negativity of barbarism. In that respect, I think that Cheonma can provide a meaningful approach in the sense of how the numerous barbarians created by modern civilization speak.
