국문 초록

이 논문은 1930~40년대 성북동을 중심으로 형성된 지식인 네트워크의 특징과 그 문화적 의미를 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 지금까지 성북동과 관련한 문학 연구는 이태준, 김용준 등 소수의 인물을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 본 연구에서는 그간 주목받지 못했던 작가들을 포함하여 성북동 지식인들의 활동과 교류 양상을 폭넓게 조명함으로써 이 지역이 다양한 예술적･지적 실천이 이루어진 공간이었음을 밝히고자 했다. 우선, 1936년 경성의 확장과 더 불어 각광받기 시작한 성북동의 변화를 살피고 성북동이 ‘문인촌’으로 인식되었던 정황을 살폈다. 그리고 당시 문학잡지와 신문, 작가들의 수필을 참고하여 성북동 지식인들의 주소지를 정리하고 『지번구획입 대경성정도(地番區劃入 大京城精圖)』에 표시한 후 그들의 지역 활동을 분석했다. 이로써 지식인의 사회적 책임과 실천적 태도가 성북동의 문명화 도모와 전원으로서의 지역성 보존이라는 딜레마 사이에 놓여 있었음을 환기했다. 본 연구에서는 네트워크 시각화 프로그램 Gephi를 활용하여 그들의 예술적･지적 교류의 구체상을 창작 및 집필 활동과 관련하여 드러내고자 했다. 그 과정에서 노자영의 『신인문학』 발간의 의미, 이병도를 중심으로 한 진단학회의 학문적 성과가 잡지 『문장』의 편집 방향이나 내용에 미쳤을 영향에 대해 언급했다. 또한, 음악가 채동선과 극작가 현철 등이 보여준 예술적 시도를 제시하여 성북동 문화 지형의 다채로운 면모를 보여주었다. 성북동이라는 특정 공간을 중심으로 형성된 지식인 네트워크의 복합적 양상은 식민지 시기 조선 지식인들의 거주 환경과 사회 활동, 그들의 창작과 예술적 실천 사이의 관계를 드러낸다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine the characteristics and cultural significance of the network of intellectuals that formed around Seongbuk-dong in the 1930s and 40s. Until now, literary studies related to Seongbuk-dong have focused primarily on a small number of figures, such as Lee Tae-jun and Kim Yong-jun. This study, however, seeks to shed light on the activities and interactions of intellectuals in Seongbuk-dong, including writers who have received less attention, to reveal that this region served as a center for various artistic and intellectual activities. First, this study examines how Seongbuk-dong came into prominence with the expansion of Gyeongseong in 1936, exploring the conditions that led to its perception as a ‘literary village’. Next, I compiled the addresses of intellectuals in Seongbuk-dong and mapped them onto the Precise Map of Gyeongseong with Street Numbers and Districts(『地番區劃入 大京城精圖』), referring to literary magazines, newspapers, and essays written by contemporary writers, and analysed their local activities. This analysis reveals that the social responsibility and practical attitudes of intellectuals reflected a dilemma: whether to promote the civilization of Seongbuk-dong or to preserve its rural character. Using the network visualization program Gephi, this study further aims to elucidate the specifics of their artistic and intellectual exchanges through their creative and writing activities. In this process, it explores the significance of Noh Ja-young’s Sinin Munhak (『新人文學』) and the influence that the academic contributions of the Chin-tan Society (震檀學會), led by Lee Byung-do, may have had on the editorial direction and content of the magazine Munjang (『文章』). The paper also presents the artistic endeavors of musician Chae Dong-sun and playwright Hyun Cheol, among others, to illustrate the diverse cultural landscape of Seongbuk-dong. The complexity of the intellectual network formed around the specific locale of Seongbuk-dong is significant in that it reveals the relationship between the living conditions and social activities of Joseon intellectuals during the colonial period and their creative and artistic practices.
