여성 작가의 ‘역사 쓰기’와 ‘돌봄’의 전망

국문 초록

최윤은 지적인 문체로 역사라는 묵직한 주제를 다룬다는 이유로 1990년대 문학장에서 남성적인, 혹은 중성적인 작가로 불려왔다. 이러한 현상은 당시의 비평 언어가 그의 소설을 분석하기에 충분치 않았음을 보여준다. 그러나 그러한 호명의 반대편에는, 여성 작가로서 자신을 정확히 인식하고 있는 최윤이 존재했다. 최윤의 번역 활동은 그가 윗세대 여성 작가의 글을 거듭 읽어왔던 것을 확인할 수 있는 지표가 된다. 그는 박완서와 같은 여성 작가의 역사 쓰기에 주목하고, 남성 작가들이 충분히 그려내지 못했던 여성의 역사가 있음을 역설한다. 그리고 최윤은 ‘여성성’을 긍정하는데, 이때의 ‘여성성’이란 생물학적 성으로 환원되지 않는 역사적 특성이다. 주변부에 있는 것을 온몸으로 거부하며, 마주하고 있는 타자를 그 자체로 대하고자 하는 능력에 최윤은 ‘여성성’이라는 이름을 붙이고 이러한 ‘여성성’이 남성에게도 존재할 수 있는 특성임을 강조한다. 본고는 2장에서 최윤이 논한 ‘여성성’의 특성에 주목하여, 그것을 ‘돌봄’으로 다시 읽고자 하였다. 그리고 최윤에게 있어 ‘여성성’이 새로운 ‘역사 쓰기’를 가능하게 하는 능력이라는 점에 기반하여, 역사를 다루고 있는 그의 1990년대 소설들에서 ‘돌봄’의 양상들을 살펴보았다. 이때, ‘역사 쓰기’와 돌봄은 또한, ‘듣기’라는 행위를 통해서 연결된다. ‘듣기’는 새로운 ‘역사 쓰기’를 위한 질문을 마련하고, 적절한 ‘돌봄’을 가능하게 만들며 최윤의 소설의 주제와 형식에서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 3장에서는 ｢전쟁들｣ 연작을 중심으로 ‘돌봄’을 불가능하게 만드는 전쟁으로 점철된 일상의 형상화를 확인하였다. 그리고 4장에서는 조르주 디디-위베르만이 논한 반딧불의 미광처럼 나타나는 ‘돌봄’의 장면들을 살펴보았다. 그의 소설에는 남성 ‘돌봄’ 주체가 수행하는 ‘돌봄’, 비인간 자연을 향한 ‘돌봄’ 등, 모성의 이름으로 여성에게 할당된 ‘돌봄’을 넘어서는 다양한 ‘돌봄’의 모델들이 나타난다. 이러한 형상은 최윤의 1990년대 소설이 ‘돌봄’의 다양한 모델을 선취하고 이를 통해 미약하나 굳건한 전망을 제시하고 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

Ch’oe Yun was labeled as a neutral or masculine writer in the literary scene of the 1990s due to her profound exploration of the weighty subject of history in an intellectual style. This phenomenon indicates that the critical language of the time was insufficient to analyze her novels adequately. However, on the opposite side of such address, there was Ch’oe Yun, a female writer who recognized herself precisely as such. Ch’oe Yun’s translation activities serve as an indicator of her repeated engagement with the writings of the older generation of female writer. She pays attention to the ‘Writing history’ of female writers like Park Wansuh, asserting the existence of a history of women that male authors could not depict adequately. Furthermore, Ch’oe Yun embraces ‘femininity,’ defining it as a historical characteristic not reduced to biological sex. Rejecting what is peripheral with her entire being and the ability to address the other as an entity unto itself form the basis for Ch’oe Yun’s identification of ‘femininity.’ She emphasizes that such ‘femininity’ can also exist in men. This paper focuses on the characteristics of ‘femininity’ discussed by Ch’oe Yun in Chapter 2, seeking to reinterpret it as ‘care.’ Building on the idea that ‘femininity’ enables new ‘Writing history’, the paper examines the manifestations of ‘care’ in her novels from the 1990s. In doing so, the paper explores the connection between ‘Writing history’ and ‘care,’ which is also linked to the act of ‘listening.’ ‘Listening’ raises questions for new ‘Writing history’, facilitating appropriate ‘care’ and occupying a crucial position in Ch’oe Yun’s novels in terms of theme and form. Chapter 3 centers on the series “Wars,” confirming the depiction of daily life saturated with war, making ‘care’ impossible. In Chapter 4, scenes of ‘care’ appearing like the shimmer of fireflies discussed by Georges Didi-Huberman are examined. Ch’oe Yun’s novels present various models of ‘care’ that go beyond the ‘care’ assigned to women in the name of maternity, including ‘care’ performed by male ‘care’ subjects and ‘care’ towards non-human nature. These representations demonstrate that Ch’oe Yun’s novels from the 1990s anticipate and present various models of ‘care,’ offering a fragile yet resilient perspective.
