손소희 소설에서의 4･19의 대안적 재현

국문 초록

이 글에서는 손소희의 1960년대 장편 연재소설 ｢사랑 있는 하늘 아래｣(1961), ｢사랑의 계절｣(1962), ｢계절풍｣(1961-1963)에서 수행된 4･19의 대안적 재현 양상을 살펴보았다. 4･19에 대한 주류적 재현이 남성 엘리트를 중심으로 이루어졌던 것에 비해, 이 글에서 분석한 손소희의 소설은 4･19의 역사에서 주변화된 존재들을 4･19의 주체로서 재현하고 있다. 우선 ｢사랑 있는 하늘 아래｣는 4･19 이후 중고등학교의 교원 배척 투쟁을 재현하고 이들을 4･19 이후 한국 민주주의의 동력으로 평가한다. 다음으로 ｢사랑의 계절｣은 도시 빈민 주체들이 4･19를 통하여 계급적 울분을 표출하거나 정치적 주체로서의 자각을 획득하는 모습을 보여준다. 마지막으로 ｢계절풍｣에서는 야간대학에 다니는 여성이 야간대생으로서 그리고 여성으로서 어려움을 겪으면서도 4･19의 주체가 되어가는 과정이 그려져 있다. 한편, 이 세 작품은 4･19를 남녀 관계와 관련하여 비유적으로 형상화하여 젠더화하고 있다. ｢사랑 있는 하늘 아래｣에서는 사각 관계를 통해 비유적으로 4･19의 지속이 그려지고 있으며, 4･19 이후 한국을 이끌어갈 정치가가 여성으로 젠더화되고 있다. ｢사랑의 계절｣과 ｢계절풍｣에서는 남성에게 유린당한 여성들의 저항과 부정한 정치적 세력에 대한 저항이 동일시되고 있다. 이를 통해 이 두 소설은 4･19라는 사건에 남성적 질서에 대한 여성적 저항이라는 젠더적 의미를 부여하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the alternative representations of the April 19 Revolution in the Son So-hee novels that were serialized in the 1960s: Under the Sky Where Love Is(1961), The Season of Love(1962), and The Seasonal Wind(1961–1963). While the mainstream representation of the April 19 Revolution has centered on the male elite, these novels represent the people who were marginalized in the history of the April 19 Revolution as the subjects of the event. First, Under the Sky Where Love Is depicts secondary school students’ struggle to ostracize their teachers after the April 19 Revolution and evaluates the students as the driving force of the post-revolutionary democracy. Second, The Season of Love portrays how poor urban citizens express class resentment and become conscious of being political subjects during the April 19 Revolution. Finally, The Seasonal Wind represents the process of female evening students becoming subjects of the April 19 Revolution while experiencing difficulties as both evening students and women. In addition, these works gender the April 19 Revolution by figuratively representing it in relation to male–female relationships. In Under the Sky Where Love Is, the continuation of the April 19 Revolution is figuratively represented through a love square, and the politician who will lead Korea after the revolution is gendered as female. In The Season of Love and The Seasonal Wind, the resistance of women who have been violated by men is equated with resistance to corrupt political forces; these two novels thus impart a gendered meaning to the April 19 Revolution, namely feminine resistance to a masculine order.
