국문 초록

‘여성적 글쓰기’는 1990년대 이래 현재에 이르기까지 여성 작가의 작품을 페미니즘의 시각에서 분석하는 주된 틀로 사용되어왔다. 그러나 2016년 페미니즘 리부트를 계기로 ‘여성적 글쓰기’가 여성의 경험을 재현하는 페미니즘 문학을 분석하는 데 있어 과연 실효성 있는 방법론인지 의문이 제기되기 시작했다. 이에 본고는 왜 이러한 질문이 나오게 되었는지를 염두에 두고 1990년대 문학장에서 ‘여성적 글쓰기’가 형성되고 전개되는 과정을 살펴보았다. 1990년대 문학장에서 ‘여성적 글쓰기’는 성별에 따른 공사 영역의 위계적 분리에 대한 페미니즘의 비판을 1980년대 말부터 한국 사회에 본격적으로 유입되기 시작한 포스트모더니즘의 근대성 비판으로 전유하면서 구성된 것이었다. 이 과정에서 여성은 근대의 타자로, 여성성은 상징화 이전의 타자성으로 정의되었다. 1990년대 문학장은 ‘여성적 글쓰기’를 활용하여 ‘여성문학’ 담론을 창안하였으며, 문학장의 주변부와 중심부는 각각 리얼리즘을 중심으로 구성된 ‘문단권력’을 비판할 수 있는 근거 및 문학의 고유성을 보수적으로 옹호하는 근거로 ‘여성문학’ 담론을 전유했다. 그러나 문학장의 주변부에서나 중심부에서나 ‘여성문학’이 정치적 목적성과 무관한 미적 자율성을 옹호하기 위한 담론으로 사용되었다는 점은 마찬가지였다. 이는 1990년대 문학장에서 ‘여성적 글쓰기’가 여성의 경험에 기반해 현실을 비판하는 정치적 실천력을 갖는 페미니즘 문학 비평 담론으로서는 그 효용이 제한적일 수밖에 없었음을 의미한다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Since the 1990s, the concept of Écriture Féminine has been an important analytical frame for examining the works of women writers from a feminist perspective. However, following the 2016 feminism reboot, some have questioned Écriture Féminine as an effective methodology for analyzing feminist literature representing women’s experiences. Keeping in mind why such questions arose, this article examines the process by which the concept emerged and developed in the literary field of the 1990s. Within the 1990s literary field, the concept of Écriture Féminine formed amid an appropriation of feminism’s critique of the gendered, hierarchical division of public and private spheres as a postmodern critique of modernity, postmodernism having been introduced to Korean society in earnest beginning in the late 1980s. In the process, women were defined as modernity’s Other, and femininity as pre-Symbolic Otherness. The 1990s literary field utilized the concept of Écriture Féminine to create a discourse of women’s literature, with both center and periphery appropriating this discourse−the periphery as a basis to criticize the literary authority constructed around realism, and the center as a basis for a conservative defense of literature’s special character. Both center and periphery used the discourse of women’s literature to defend an aesthetic autonomy unrelated to political aims. Thus, the 1990s literary field’s concept of Écriture Féminine was bound to be limited in its usefulness as a feminist literary-critical discourse capable of political action via social critique based on women’s experiences of oppression.
