국문 초록

김윤식의 최재서 연구를 다시 읽으면서 그가 남겨 놓은 문제들을 첨예화하는 것이 이 글의 목표이다. 최재서(1908-1964)는 경성제국대학 영문과에서 영국 낭만주의 문학을 공부하였으며, 1934년에는 T. E. Hulme, T. S. Eliot, H. Read, I. A. Richards 등을 소개한 ｢현대 주지주의(Intellectualism) 문학이론｣을 발표하였으며, 한국의 모더니즘 문학자인 김기림, 이상, 박태원에 대한 뛰어난 비평을 남긴 바 있다. 그러나 최재서는 1942년 󰡔국민문학󰡕의 편집인을 활동하며 친일문학으로 나아갔으며, 해방 이후에는 셰익스피어 연구자로서 많은 업적을 남겼다. 김윤식은 1966년에 ｢최재서론｣을 발표한 이래로, 1984년에는 ｢개성과 성격-최재서론｣을 발표했으며, 2009년에는 단행본 『최재서의 『국민문학』과 사토 기요시 교수』를 출간한 바 있다. ｢최재서론｣(1966)은 한국근대문예비평사의 관점에서 최재서가 소개한 주지주의 문학이론의 성취와 한계에 대해서 고찰했다. ｢개성과 성격-최재서론｣(1984)에서는 최재서의 문학 연구가 경성제국대학 영문과와 낭만주의 상상력에 근거하고 있음을 밝혔다. 또한 『최재서의 『국민문학』과 사토 기요시 교수』(2009)에서는 『국민문학』이 경성제대의 문화 자본이 투입된 이중어 글쓰기 공간임을 규명한 바 있다. 김윤식의 연구는 주지주의, 경성제국대학, 이중어 글쓰기로 확대되어 왔다. 본고에서는 『경성제대 영문학회보』를 통해서 경성제대 영문과의 학문적 분위기를 살펴보았으며, 일본어로 발표된 최재서의 주지주의 이론의 의미를 점검하였다.

영문 초록

This article aims to refine our understanding of the problems left to us by Kim Yoon-shik through a rereading of his research on Choi Jae-seo. Choi Jae-seo (1908-1964) studied British Romanticism in the English Literature Department at Gyeongseong Imperial University. In 1934 he published “Modern Intellectualist Literary Theory,” introducing the work of T. E. Hulme, T. S. Eliot, Herbert Read, I. A. Richards, and others. In addition, he left exceptional criticism on the work of Korean modernists Kim Ki-rim, Yi Sang, and Pak Taewon. However in 1942, working as editor of the magazine National Literature(國民文學), he followed the course of pro-Japanese literature, and after the liberation his primary achievements were as a Shakespeare scholar. Kim Yoon-shik first published “A Study of Choi Jae-seo (Choejaeseoron)” in 1966, later publishing “Personality and Character – A Study of Choi Jae-seo (Gaeseonggwa Seonggyeok - Choejaeseoron)” in 1984, and the book-length study Choi Jae-seo’s National Literature and Professor Sato Kiyoshi (Choejaeseoui Gukminmunhakgwa Sato Kiyosi Gyosu) in 2009. “A study of Choi Jae-seo” (1966) examines the achievements and limitations of the intellectualist literary theory Choi Jae-seo introduced, placing it within the history of modern Korean literary criticism. In “Personality and Character – A Study of Choi Jae-seo” (1984) Kim Yoon-shik shows that Choi Jae-seo’s literary research has its basis in the English Literature Department at Gyeongseong Imperial University and the romantic imagination. Choi Jae-seo’s National Literature and Professor Sato Kiyoshi (2009) reveals that National Literature was a bilingual creative writing space invested with the cultural capital of Gyeongseong Imperial University. Thus, Kim Yoon-shik’s research expanded from intellectualism to Gyeongseong Imperial University, and then to bilingual creative writing. This article investigates the academic atmosphere of Gyeongseong Imperial University’s English literature department through the Gyeongseong Imp. Univ. English Literature Review (Gyeongseongjedae Yeongmunhakhoebo) and examines the meaning of Choi Jae-seo’s work on intellectualism published in Japanese.
