Aronia berry ( Aronia melanocarpa ) increases the lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster

영문 초록

Aronia berry ( Aronia melanocarpa ), is rich in polyphenolic pigment compounds, like anthocyanins. Although aronia berry extract (ABE) is known to reduce the generation of reactive oxygen species in cellular level and reduction of oxidative damage is sometimes linked to increased lifespan, there have been no trials to test the longevity regulating effect of ABE in animal model so far. To test it, we measured lifespan, resistance to stresses, expression levels of SOD genes, and GSSG/GSH ratio in Drosophila melanogaster after ABE feeding. We found that ABE significantly increased the mean lifespan of white Canton-S fruit flies. In addition, ABE increased the resistance to oxidative stress of white Canton-S female flies, and enhanced antioxidant capacity measured by the ratio of GSSG/GSH. The mRNA levels of SOD1 and SOD2 were decreased by 5 μg/mL ABE, possibly because the flies supplemented ABE possesses low level of reactive oxygen species. We conclude that ABE increases the lifespan of flies, possibly by reducing reactive oxygen species. Aronia berry can be used as worthy anti-aging and prolongevity supplements.
