국문 초록

일반적으로 아편전쟁은 청나라와 유럽 열강 간 무역분쟁의 결과로 이해된다. 그러나 해당 전쟁은 중화 조공 책봉 체제와 유럽 베스트팔렌 체제 간 충돌로 볼 필요가 있으며, 이는 프랑스와 영국이 승전의 우선적인 대가로 고도의 정치·외교적 요구 수용을 청나라에 강요했기 때문이다. 근본적으로 양 세계질서 간 충돌은 이념적 기반 그리고 체제 운영 방식 간 상호이질성으로 인해 불가피하였다. 게다가 중화 조공 책봉 체제가 내포하는 특유의 극단적 경직성은 유럽 베스트팔렌 체제와의 공존을 불가능하게 만들었다. 양 세계질서 간 충돌의 결과로서 중화 조공 책봉 체제는 불가역적으로 붕괴하였고, 동아시아는 유럽 베스트팔렌 체제로 완전하게 통합되었다. 결론적으로 이는 유럽발 보편적 세계질서의 세계화 완성을 의미함과 동시에, 그것의 유산은 오늘날 자유주의 세계질서를 통해 지속되고 있다.

영문 초록

The Opium Wars are generally understood to be a result of radicalized trade conflicts between Qing China and European powers. However, these wars should be regarded as a clash of the Sinocentric tributary system and the European Westphalian system, as both victorious powers—France and Great Britain—preferentially made highly politico-diplomatic demands. This collision between two world orders was inevitable due to their incompatibility in terms of ideological bases and operation methods. Furthermore, the extreme inflexibility of the Sinocentric tributary system made its coexistence with the European Westphalian system impossible. As a result of this clash, the Sinocentric tributary system collapsed, and East Asia became integrated into the European Westphalian system. Finally, this completed the global expansion of a universal world order originating from Europe that every nation and continent could share, such as the liberal one of today.
