국문 초록

본 논문은 최선배(崔善培)의 음악 업적과 구술 기록을 바탕으로 그의 음악 철학과 후대에 미친 영향을 고찰한다. 최선배는 한국 재즈의 1세대 트럼펫 연주자로, 그의 음악 생애는 한국 재즈사의 형성과 발전에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 그는 1950년대 AFKN 전파방송을 통하여 재즈를 접하고 이것을 자신의 독자적인 방식으로 습득하였으며 한국 재즈 문화에 중요한 발자취를 남겼다. 특히 그가 활동했던 미8군 무대를 비롯한 음악씬에서의 다양한 연주 경험을 통하여 음악적 기술뿐만 아니라 폭넓은 인간관계 속 배움과 겸손이라는 삶의 흔적을 확인하였다. 최선배의 음악 생애를 연구하고 기록으로 남기는 것은 한국 대중음악사에서 재즈의 수용 과정 이해에 중요하며, 재즈라는 서양음악 장르가 한국 대중음악에 어떻게 스며들었는지를 설명하는 중요한 학문적 작업이다. 따라서 본 논문은 최선배의 생애, 음악 철학, 후대에 미친 영향 등을 고찰하여 한국 재즈씬은 물론 대중음악 전반에 미친 영향을 기록하는 데 이바지하고자 한다. 수상 내역, 음반 발매, 공연 기록, 보도자료 등을 정리하였으나 2000년대 이전의 자료와 특히 일본 공연 관련 자료는 이후 보완이 필요하다. 그의 음악 생애는 개인의 고난을 넘어선 창의적 표현의 과정이었고, 후배들에게 재즈의 본질을 전수하며 한국 재즈의 미래를 형성하는 데 이바지하였다. 본 연구는 구술사적 접근을 통해 최선배의 생애를 분석하고, 음(音), 악(惡/樂), 인(人), 연(連)이라는 네 개로 주제화, 명명하였다. 최선배의 생애사를 통하여 인생 가치관이자 음악 철학은 ‘도전’, ‘자유’, ‘겸손’이라는 개념을 도출하였다. 현재 진행형인 최선배의 음악 생애는 기록, 보존, 확산, 계승될 가치가 있으며 여타 원로 음악인의 구술 채록 연구에 대한 꾸준한 지원과 실행이 필요하다.

영문 초록

This paper examines Choi Sun-bae’s musical philosophy and influence on later generations based on his oral records. Choi Sun-bae (崔善培) is a first-generation trumpet player of Korean jazz, and his musical life had a profound influence on the formation and development of Korean jazz history. He encountered jazz through AFKN radio broadcasting in the 1950s, acquired it in his own unique way, and left important traces on Korean jazz culture. In particular, through his various performance experiences in the music scene, including the US 8th Army stage where he was active, we confirmed traces of his life of learning and humility in a wide range of human relationships as well as musical skills. Researching and recording Choi Sun-bae’s musical life is important for understanding the process of jazz acceptance in Korean popular music history, and is an important academic work that explains how jazz, a Western music genre, permeated Korean popular music. Therefore, this paper examines Choi Sun-bae’s life, musical philosophy, and influence on later generations to contribute to recording his influence on the Korean jazz scene as well as popular music in general. Awards, album releases, performance records, press releases, etc. were organized, but materials prior to the 2000s and especially materials related to Japanese performances need to be supplemented. His musical life was a process of creative expression that transcended personal hardships, and he contributed to shaping the future of Korean jazz by passing on the essence of jazz to his juniors. This study analyzed Choi Sun-bae’s life through an oral history approach, categorizing and naming it into four categories: sound (音), Suffering/Enjoying (惡/樂), human (人), and connection (連). Through Choi Sun-bae’s life history, the upper concepts of his life values and musical philosophy were derived: ‘challenge,’ ‘freedom,’ and ‘humility.’ Choi Sun-bae’s musical life, which is currently in progress, deserves to be recorded, preserved, disseminated, and inherited, and continuous support for oral history research by other senior musicians is needed.
