[서평] 우리는 왜 용서보다 복수에 열광하는가?

국문 초록

『복수의 심리학-우리는 왜 용서보다 복수에 열광하는가』에서는 책 제목만큼 그에 대한 답변을 명쾌하게 제시해주진 않는다. 복수에 열광하는 이유에 초점을 맞추기보다는 ‘응징’의 유형 분류와 사례 제시 그리고 그 의미에 대해서 정리하는 것으로 구성되어 있다. 다만 분명한 것은 인간이 지니는 복수의 의미를 제시해준다. 즉, 인간이 지닌 ‘가장 원초적인 욕구’이면서 ‘자아와 공동체의 궁극적 자기 진술’, 그리고 ‘날것 그대로의 정의’임을 정리하면서 ‘우리 모두 잠재적 복수자’임을 명시한다. <더 글로리>에서 주목해야할 점은 어떻게 복수를 이루었으며 가해자와 피해자는 어떻게 되었는가에 있지 않다. ‘선’이라는 허울을 벗어던지고 ‘악’을 자처하는 인물에서 ‘측은지심’을 느끼고 ‘악’임에도 그의 복수에 매혹되는 것에 있다.

영문 초록

Revenge: A Short Inquiry into Retribution does not provide the answer as clearly as the title of the book. Rather than focusing on the reasons for the enthusiasm for revenge, it consists of categorizing the types of ‘punishment’, presenting examples, and organizing their meanings. However, what is clear is that it suggests the meaning of revenge that humans have. In other words, it is clear that ‘we are all potential avengers’, arranging ‘the most basic desire’ of human beings, ‘the ultimate self-statement of self and community’, and ‘justice as it is’. The point to pay attention to in is not how revenge was achieved and what happened to the perpetrator and the victim. It lies in feeling ‘compassion’ from a person who throws off the guise of ‘good’ and pretends to be ‘evil’ and is fascinated by his revenge even though he is ‘evil’.
