성격특질의 신경과학적 계량화 가능성

국문 초록

심리학 연구에서는 개인의 성격 및 성향과 같이 직접적으로 관찰하기 힘든 심리적 상태나 과정들에 대한 데이터를 얻기 위해 자가보고나 설문조사 기법을 주로 활용한다. 하지만 인간의 심리는 상당 부분 의식하는(subconscious) 영역에 속하기 때문에 설문조사 기법만으로는 정확히 알아내는 데 한계가 있을 수밖에 없다. 이에 본 연구에서는 설문조사 기법의 한계를 보완하기 위해 좌, 우뇌의 전두엽에서 발생하는 알파파의 비대칭 정도를 수리적으로 나타낸 지표인 전두비대칭뇌파(FAA, frontal alpha asymmetry)와 고난, 역경 등을 견뎌내고 효과적으로 성장, 적응하는 성격특질인 회복탄력성 간의 상관관계를 조사해 봄으로써 성격특질의 측정에 신경과학적 방법론을 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 검증하였다. 휴지상태 5분간 측정한 피험자 23명의 뇌파로부터 추출한 FAA와 이 피험자들의 한국형 회복탄력성 검사도구(KRQ-53) 결과를 비교 분석한 결과, FAA가 회복탄력성과 상관관계를 가지는 것으로 나타났으며, 회복탄력성의 구성요소 중에서도 특히 대인관계능력, 회복탄력성의 세부요소 중에서도 특히 원인통제력, 소통능력과 유의미한 상관을 가지는 것으로 드러났다. 이와 같은 결과는 FAA와 같은 신경과학적 측정 데이터가 성격특질측정을 기반으로 진행되는 연구의 신뢰도 제고나 타당성 검증에 유용하게 활용될 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

In psychology, like in other social sciences, self reports and questionnaires are used most frequently for the quantification of psychological processes. However, it is well known that such off-line measurements could hardly capture the unconscious mental activities/properties accurately. The present study investigated whether such a problem could be overcome by introducing a neuro-scientific method as a supplement to the conventional off-line measures of personality trait. For this purpose, 23 adults’ frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) that is basically the relative strength of the right-frontal to the left-frontal alpha wave was recorded for 5 minutes’ steady state, and compared with these participants’ scores of KRQ-53, a questionnaire measuring resilience usually investigated in social psychology. Interestingly, FAA turned out to correlate with resilience, especially with interpersonal competence, cause control, and communication skill among its sub-components. This result demonstrates that the neuro-scientific data might well contribute to a more accurate quantification of personality traits, desirably within an interdisciplinary research framework of brain and social science.
