국문 초록

이 글은 조선 후기 ‘燕行錄三家’라 일컫는 김창업ㆍ홍대용ㆍ박지원의 연행록을 중심으로 풍속의 의미와 기록의 추이를 고찰하는 데 주안점을 두었다. 조선 후기 연행록 저자들에게 풍속은 청의 정체성을 파악하기 위해 중점적으로 살펴야 할 대상이었다. 이는 풍속이 조선의 왕도정치에서 교화의 기본 대상이자 그 결과이기 때문이다. 따라서 이들은 성인의 가르침을 제도화한 관혼상제와 의복 등을 제대로 따르고 있는지, 또는 충신ㆍ효자 등을 기리고 있는지를 살펴 풍속교화의 성패 여부를 판단할 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 시각으로 청 입관 후 북경을 오가며 중국 견문을 기록한 다수의 연행록 저자들은 호복과 변발로 바뀐 중국을 보면서 중화 문명이 무너지고 오랑캐가 천하를 웅거하였음을 확인했다. 그러나 입관 후 청의 치세에 주목한 저자들은 청의 풍속을 재인식하거나 새로운 대상으로 눈을 돌리며 만주족이 지배하는 중국을 재인식하기 시작하였다. 그들은 호복의 실용성과 조선 의관의 불편함을 대비하며 기존의 관점을 전환하고, 이전에는 크게 주목하지 않았던 人情, 人品을 자세히 관찰하고 높이 평가하면서 청나라 풍속의 후함을 강조하기 시작하였다. 또한 그들은 청의 풍속을 폭넓게 관찰하고 새로운 면을 적지 않게 발견하면서, 이전 교화의 대상으로서 풍속에서 이용후생을 위한 관심사로서의 풍속으로 기록하기 시작하였고, 이것이 축적되어 북학론을 형성한다. 한편으로 풍속은 청조의 운수를 짐작하는 중요한 근거로 간주되어 이와 관련된 기록이 전하기도 한다. 그러나 이는 이전 ‘胡無百年’설과 같이 화이론적 사고와는 다른 관점에서 중국의 흥망을 내다보는 방식이다. 이 연구는 조선후기 연행록에 기록된 풍속을 총괄적으로 고찰하기 위한 시론으로 수행된 것으로, 이를 바탕으로 향후 전체 연행록으로 확대하여 살필 필요가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on examining the meaning of customs and the trend of records, centering on the records of Kim Chang-up, Hong Dae-yong, and Park Ji-won. For the authors of Yeonhaengnok in the late Joseon Dynasty, customs were an object to focus on in order to grasp the identity of the Qing Dynasty. This is because customs are the basic object and result of edification in Joseon s royal politics. It was considered that the success or failure of customs cultivation could be judged by examining whether the ceremonial occasions and ceremonies were followed properly, or whether the loyalists and filial sons were honored. From this point of view, in a number of chronological records that recorded Chinese knowledge while traveling to and from Beijing after Qing was admitted, it was confirmed that the Chinese civilization collapsed and the barbarians occupied the world by seeing China changed into Manchu clothing and pigtails. However, authors who witnessed the political stability and prosperity of Qing after entering the country began to re-recognize China by reinterpreting the existing customs of Qing or turning to new objects. They prepared for the practicality of Manchu clothes and the inconvenience of Joseon clothes, changed their perspectives, and began to emphasize the generosity of Chinese customs by closely observing and evaluating the character of a person who had not paid much attention before. In addition, while observing the customs of China extensively and discovering not a few new aspects, it began to record from customs as an object of previous edification to customs as a concern for welfare, and this accumulates to form the theory of Bukhak. On the one hand, customs are regarded as an important basis for predicting the rise and fall of China, and related records are sometimes transmitted. However, this is a way of looking at the rise and fall of China from a different perspective from the theory of pharmacology, as in the previous “胡無百年(A barbarian country will be destructed in less than a hundred years.)” theory. Based on this study, which was carried out as a preliminary step to comprehensively review the customs recorded in the late Joseon dynasty, it will be necessary to expand it to the entire chronological record in the future.
