올림픽 10종경기 기록에 관한 분석

국문 초록

10종경기는 트랙의 단ㆍ중거리와 허들을 비롯해 도약과 투척까지 이틀 동안 이 모든 경기를 펼쳐야 하는 육상 종목이다. 본 연구에서는 1972년부터 2008년까지 올림픽에서의 10종경기 기록의 변화를 살펴보고 올림픽경기에서 8000점 이상인 선수들의 기록을 이용하여 군집분석과 요인분석을 실시하였으며 발생하는 문제점을 설명하였다. 또한 10종경기에서 개별종목 및 종목군의 중요도 순서와 트랙과 필드 종목 중 어느 분야가 더 중요한 비중을 차지하는 지를 설명하였으며, 좋은 점수를 얻기 위한 방법을 제시하였다. 그 결과 올림픽 데이터인 경우에는 군집의 개수가 5개인 것이 가장 타당하다고 생각되어지며, 올림픽에서는 전반적으로 필드 경기를 잘하는 선수들이 성적이 좋으나 최상위 그룹에 속하려면 멀리뛰기를 포함한 트랙경기를 더 잘해야 하는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The decathlon is an athletic event consisting of ten track and field events. Events are held over two consecutive days and the winners are determined by the combined performance in all. Performance is judged on a points system in each event, not by the position achieved. In this paper, we compare with decathlon performances from the 1970s to 2000s using top 10 decathletes in the each Olympic game. Also we use cluster analysis to determine the groupings inherent within the decathlon disciplines using a score of 8000 points or higher, the subset of Olympic decathletes. We see decathlon can be composed of four major factors using factor analysis. But the problem of the determinants of performance in field and track events has by no means yet been cleared. For this elite sub-sample we found that a uniform relatively high performance in all individual disciplines is required to compete successfully at this level. Also athletes who perform better at the track disciplines including long jump may obtain an advantage to become decathlon Olympic medalists.
