국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 유학생이 편찬한 『우라키』를 대상으로, ‘조선의 아메리칸 드림’과 ‘식민지인으로서의 삶’이 엮어낸 혼종적 주체성에 대해 고찰하고자 했다. 먼저, 미국 유학생이 보여주고 있는 오리엔탈리즘과 옥시덴탈리즘에 대해 고찰했다. 미국 유학생은 일상을 통해 제국주의적 인간으로 새롭게 구성되었다. 이들의 제국주의적 면모는 조선을 문명과 대비되는 미개, 미발전 상태로 규정하는 오리엔탈리즘적인 시선에서 발견할 수 있었다. 그러나 미국 유학생은 동양인·식민지인이라는 조건에 의해, 미국 문명에 대한 비판적 자세 역시 견지했다. 그런데 이 비판의 내용은 유학의 논리에 기초하여 서구의 물질문명을 비윤리적이라고 비판했던 개화기 유학자들의 옥시덴탈리즘과 연결되어 있었다. 이러한 옥시덴탈리즘적인 면모는 오리엔탈리즘을 내면화한 미국 유학생의 정체성을 혼종적인 것으로 만들었다. 오리엔탈리즘을 내면화한 옥시덴탈리스트로서의 면모는 『우라키』 소재 문학을 형성하는 주요 원천이었다. 『우라키』 소재 문학은 ‘향수’와 ‘일상’이라는 키워드로 요약될 수 있었다. 먼저, 조선에 대한 그리움을 다루고 있는 문학은 대부분 조선을 미국과 대비되는 자연, 빈곤, 쇠퇴, 감성 등의 특성으로 표현했다. 이는 서구의 오리엔탈리즘적 시선에서 조선을 인식한 결과라고 할 수 있다. 한편, 『우라키』 소재 문학의 또 다른 화두는 미국에서의 일상이었다. 미국에서 강요된 타자의 역할을 수행했던 미국 유학생이 문학 속에 재현한 미국은 차별, 물질만능주의와 같은 문제적인 것이었다. 또한 『우라키』의 문학은 미국을 비판하면서 동시에 미국 문화를 내재화하는 모순된 자아의 모습을 형상화하기도 했다. 식민과 제국 그리고 동양과 서양이라는 경계인의 특성을 담고 있는 『우라키』에 대한 본 연구는 『우라키』의 중요성을 새롭게 환기했다는 의의와 더불어 식민지 시기 해외 한인문학에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓혔다는 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

This study considered a hybrid subjectivity composed of the “American Dream of Korea” and the “Colonial Life” in The Rocky magazine. The Rocky was compiled by Korean students in the United States during the Japanese colonial period. First, we examined the orientalism and occidentalism that Korean students in the United States showed. They were newly constructed as “imperial humans” throughout their daily lives. Their imperialism could be found in the orientalistic gaze that defines Joseon as an undeveloped state in contrast to a civilized state, but they also criticized American civilization. However, this was connected to the occidentalism that Korean Confucian scholars claimed. This occidentalistic aspect made their oriental identities hybrid. The literature in The Rocky was based on occidentalism, including orientalism. It could be summarized as homesickness and daily life. First, most of the literature dealing with the longing for Joseon expressed it as having the characteristics of nature, poverty, decline and emotion. This is contrary to the characteristics of the United States and is the result of the recognition of Joseon from an orientalist perspective. Second, another topic of literature in The Rocky was daily life in the United States. Korean students in the United States criticized American racism and materialism in everyday life. In addition, the literature in The Rocky shows a contradictory self because it criticizes America and simultaneously resembles America. The significance of this study is in its new emphasis on the importance of The Rocky. In addition, the study is significant as it broadens the perception of Korean literature abroad.
