정지용 초기 시의 일본 근대문화 수용과 문화의식

국문 초록

이 글은 정지용의 초기 시 중에서 <카페․프란스>, <파충류동물>,<황마차>를 중심으로 피식민 주체로서 타자의 문화인 일본 근대문화를 어떤 관점과 태도로 수용하고 있는지, 그에 따른 문화의식이 어떤 의미를 지니는지를 집중 논의했다. 첫째, 시 <카페․프란스>는 카페의 이국적인 풍경을 담고 있으면서, 시적 자아의 시선에 포착되는 대상들을 통해 피식민 주체로서의 자아인식을 뚜렷이 보여주는 작품이다. 그러면서 ‘이국종’들인 종려나무, 앵무새, 강아지 등 소외된 대상들과의 감정적 동일시를 통해 시적 자아의 심각한 소외의식과 자조적인 자기비하 의식을 표출하고 있기도 하다. 여기에 제국의 근대문화에 대한 냉정한 수용 태도가 개입되어 있는 것으로 파악된다. 둘째, 시 <파충류동물>은 식민주체의 문화적 상징인 ‘기차’를 괴상하고 혐오스러운 파충류동물에 비유하고 있는 작품이다. 이는 피식민 주체로서 타자의 문화를 거부하는 배제의 심리가 작용된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 더욱이 일본인에 대해서 ‘왜놈’이란 속어로 비하하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 ‘다리털’의 동물적인 속성을 들어 불쾌감까지 표명하고 있기도 하다. 이는 제국의 식민담론에 대한 역담론으로, 탈식민의 저항담론적 성격을 갖는 작품으로 해석할 수 있는 근거가 된다. 셋째, 시 <황마차>는 일본의 근대 도시를 배경으로, 이방인이자 피식민 주체로 식민 제국의 도시 속에서 근원적으로 느끼는 존재의 불안의 식과 공포감을 기반으로 한 작품이다. 시적 자아는 도시의 밤거리 한가운데 있으면서 공간과 시간의 양쪽에서 받는 불안의식과 공포감에서 왜소화된다. 이를 벗어나는 길은 오직 도시에서 탈주하는 수밖에 없는데, 그것이 바로 ‘황마차’를 타고 도시를 탈주하는 꿈을 꾸는 것이다. 이상 정지용의 초기 시에서 일본의 근대문화는 대체로 부정적이거나 비판적으로 수용되고 있는 특징을 보인다. 이는 일본의 근대문화가 시적자아에게 낯설음과 이질감 등으로 부조화의 상태에 놓이거나, 배제의 심리로 혐오나 거부의 대상이 되거나, 또는 불안의식과 공포감을 주는 위압적 대상이 되기 때문이다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the perspective through which the culture of Japan was assimilated by the colonial subject focusing on Jeong Ji-yong’s poems “Cafe France”, “Reptiles” and “The Covering Carriage” and discusses the significance of that culture based on the cultural consciousness that was formed by that assimilation. The first poem, “Cafe France” is filled with exotic images and through the objects captured in the focus of the gaze of the poetic self, that colonized self-consciousness is revealed. By establishing an emotional identification between “exotic” images such as palm trees, parrots, and puppies, and dispossed objects, the poet expresses both a powerful sense of alienation and a mocking self-abnegation. Here we can see that an unemotional attitude toward the acceptance of the modern culture of the empire has been interjected. In the second poem, “Reptiles” the train, the cultural symbol of colonial subjectivity, is figuratively depicted as a monstrous and repulsive reptile. This can be seen as a psychological exclusion mechanism of the colonized that rejects the culture of the other. Not only is he belittling the Japanese with the term “Jap” but the poet also adds an unsavory touch by describing their legs as “hairy” alluding to animal-like characteristics. These aspects of the poem make it possible to read it as a reversal of the colonial narrative of the empire and as resistance narrative as well. The third poem “The Covering Carriage” set in a modern Japanese city, is undercut with the sense of insecurity and fear necessarily felt by an outsider and colonial subject in a city of the empire. The poetic self, while negotiating the night streets of the city, is diminished by the sense of insecurity and fear that it experiences simultaneously from both the time and space that it is located in. The only why out of this is to leave the city and the means of that departure is found by dreaming of escape in the “Covering Carriage.” The early poems of Jeong Ji-yong showed characteristics of a negative and critical reception of Japanese modern culture. This was due to the following: modern Japanese culture placed the poetic self in a state of unbalance characterized by defamiliarization and difference, made this self the object of disgust or rejection through an exclusionist psychology, or coerced it by injecting feeling of insecurity and fear.
