국문 초록

이 논문은 科詩연구의 성과와 과제를 점검하고, 조선후기 과거제의 실상을 배경으로 과시의 형식과 문체적 특징을 고찰하였다. 과시의 형식 규정은 18세기를 전후하여 성립하였으나, 그것은 제도적으로 명문화된 규정이 아니라 암묵적으로 형성된 요령에 가까웠다. 따라서 과시의 창작이 매우 어려웠을 것이라는 선입견과 달리, 과시의 창작은 일반 한시의 창작에 비해 수월하였으며, 과시의 학습 역시 일반 한시의 학습에 선행하였다. 과시의 형식 규정이 엄격하게 준수되지 않은 이유는 조선후기 과거제도가 변별력보다 사회통합기능을 중시하는 방향으로 변화하였기 때문이다. 형식이 엄격할수록 변별력은 높아지는 반편, 학습 여건의 수혜를 받지 못한 이들이 소외되는 결과를 초래한다. 소외를 막으려면 형식적 제약의 완화는 필수적이다. 과시의 형식과 문체적 특징은 계층과 지역, 심지어 작문 능력까지도 막론한 공정하고 균등한 선발을 추구하는 방향으로 전개된 조선후기 과거제도의 변화를 반증한다. 과시를 비롯한 과시문은 제도와 그것이 구현되는 현실 사이의 긴장관계가 만들어내는 역동적인 변화의 산물이다.

영문 초록

This thesis examines the results and tasks of the research on the poetry for the civil service examination, Gwasi, and investigated the type and literary form of Gwasi from the realistic background of the state examination system in the late Chosŏn period. While the formation of Gwasi was established before and after the 18th century, the regulation was closer to the implicit method rather than explicit institutional regulation. Different from the prejudice that Gwasi might be the difficult due to the strict formative restriction, Gwasi was far easier to compose compared with general Chinese poems. The learning of Gwasi superseded the learning of general Chinese poem. The state examination system in the late Chosŏn period was changed to stress the social integration function rather than having discrimination which was the reason why the for mative regulation was not properly observed. If the formative style is stressed, it may increase discrimination, but at the same time, it results in the alienation of those who are not benefited from learning environment. To prevent alienation, it is essential to relieve formative restrictions. The style and literature features of Gwasi demonstrated the change of the state examination system in the later Chosŏn period that sought fair and equal selection regardless of hierarchy, region and even the literary ability. The literature for the civil service examination including Gwasi was an output of dynamic change created by the tension between the institutional system and its embodied reality.
