국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 노년층의 문장 처리 능력에 대한 다양한 견해가 있지만, 한국 노년층의 실시간 문장 처리 능력을 살펴본 연구는 상대적으로 부족하다. 본 연구는 주격관형절이 포함된 복문에서 어순 전형성이 한국 노년층의 실시간 문장 처리 능력에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 방법: 총 42명(청년층 21명, 노년층 21명)은 주격관형절이 포함된 복문을 자기조절읽기로 읽은 후, 이해 문장을 실시하였다. 각 집단의 이해 문장 정반응 및 반응 시간을 분석하였고, 복문 내 읽기 구간별 실시간 읽기 시간을 측정하여 문장의 정보가 통합되는 위치를 분석하였다. 결과: 노년층은 청년층보다 정반응이 유의하게 낮았고, 반응 시간이 유의하게 길었다. 또한, 반응 시간에서 비전형 문장의두 집단 간 차이가 전형 문장보다 유의하게 큰 것으로 나타났다. 노년층은 전형 및 비전형 문장 모두에서 청년층에 비해 유의하게 긴 읽기 시간을 보였고, 복문 내 읽기 구간별 읽기 시간에서는 주격관형절, 주격관형절의 수식을 받는 명사, 동사에서 공통적으로 집단 간 차이가 유의하였다. 논의 및 결론: 노년층은 청년층에 비해 인지적 처리 부담이 증가하는 비전형 어순에서 특히 더 어려움을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 노년층은 읽기 구간별 실시간 읽기 시간이 주격관형절의 수식을 받는 명사구에서 가장 길게 나타나, 실시간 문장 처리에서도 작업기억이 관여된다는 이론을 뒷받침한다.

영문 초록

Objectives: There is debate about whether sentence processing abilities decline with age in older adults, or if they remain relatively intact. In contrast to the numerous studies on English-speaking populations, little research has been conducted on the real-time sentence processing abilities of Korean-speakers. This study aims to explore the effects of word order canonicity on the real-time sentence processing abilities of older adults using center-embedded sentences with subject-relative clauses. Methods: A total of 42 participants, 21 young and 21 older adults, participated in a self-paced reading paradigm involving complex sentences with subject-relative clauses. Participants read the sentences and subsequently judged related statements. Additionally, reading times for each segment of the complex sentences were recorded to determine where sentence information was integrated. Results: Older adults showed significantly lower accuracy and longer response times in judgment statements compared to younger adults. The response times exhibited significantly greater differences between the two groups in noncanonical word order sentences than in canonical ones. Additionally, older adults had significantly longer online reading times in both canonical and noncanonical word orders compared to younger adults, with notable differences in the regions of the subject-relative clause and the noun phrase modified by the subject-relative clause. Conclusion: Older adults struggle more with sentence both offline and online compared to younger adults, especially with noncanonical word orders due to higher cognitive loads. Their longest reading times occurred in noun phrases modified by subject-relative clauses, supporting the role of working memory in real-time processing.
