다문화 언어발달장애 아동을 위한 비구어 실행기능의 임상적 진단 가능성 탐색

국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 본 연구에서는 비구어 실행기능(업데이트, 억제조절, 인지적 유연성)이 다문화 아동의 언어적 어려움을 탐지해내는지 알아보기 위해 임상적 진단 가능성을 확인하고자 하였다. 방법: 만 4-7세 학령전기 아동의 다문화 아동(일반 아동 24명, 언어발달장애 아동 26명) 총 50명이 참여하였다. 모든 아동이 비구어 실행기능 과제를 수행하였다. 다문화 아동 중 언어발달장애 아동을 식별할 수 있는지 확인하기 위해 판별분석과 ROC curve 분석을 실시하였다. 결과: 비구어 실행기능 과제에서 다문화 언어발달장애 아동은 다문화 일반 아동에 비해 일관적으로 부족한 수행을 보였으며, 원 집단 케이스의 총 80.0% (특이도=75.0%, 민감도=84.6%)가 올바르게 분류되는 것으로 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 본 연구는 더 나은 언어능력을 보이는 아동에게서 실행기능의 이점이 보고된다는 선행연구를 뒷받침한다. 본 연구를 통해 실행기능 수행에 대한 이중언어의 이점을 확인할 수 없었는데, 이는 한국의 다문화 아동이 집 안팎에서 모국어를 사용할 수 있는 충분한 기회가 부족하기 때문일 가능성이 높다. 다문화 아동이 두 가지 언어를 사용할 수 있는 잠재력은 계속해서 격려되어야 한다. 본 연구는 비구어 실행기능 과제를 통해 학령전기 다문화 아동의 언어발달장애를 진단할 수 있는 가능성을 확인한 것에 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives: This study attempted to explore the possibility of clinical diagnosis to see if nonverbal executive functions (updating, inhibition, cognitive flexibility) detect language difficulties in culturally diverse children. Methods: Culturally diverse children [TD (typically developing children)= 24, LD (children with language disorder)= 26] in the preschool age of 4 to 7 years old participated in this study. All children participated in the nonverbal executive function tasks. Discriminant analysis and ROC (Receiver Operator Characteristic) curve analysis were conducted to confirm whether it is possible to identify children with language disorders among culturally diverse children. Results: The differences between TD and LD in culturally diverse children’s nonverbal executive function were consistently significant, and a total of 80.0% (specificity= 75.0%, sensitivity= 84.6%) of the original group cases could be correctly classified. Conclusion: This study supports previous studies that reported the benefits of executive function in children with better language skills. This study did not reveal the benefits of bilingualism for performing executive functions, which is likely influenced by the lack of sufficient opportunities for culturally diverse children in Korea to speak their native languages both inside and outside their homes. The potential for culturally diverse children to speak two languages should continue to be encouraged. This study is meaningful in identifying the possibility of diagnosing language disorders in culturally diverse children in pre-school age through nonverbal executive functioning tasks.
