『논어(論語)』에 나타난 ‘우정관’ 연구

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은『논어』에 나타난 친구 관계에서의 지향점, 즉 ‘우정관’을 고찰하는 데 있다. 논의 과정에서 고대 로마의 정치학자 키케로의 『우정에 관하여』의 내용을 연계하여, 우정과 관련해『논어』내에서도 논쟁의 여지가 있는 문구들을 보다 일관성 있게 풀이하는 작업에 활용하였다. 이러한 목적과 방법론을 전제로, ① 본 연구에서는 먼저『논어』에 나타난 친구의 의미와 친구 사귐의 이유부터 살펴보았다. 관계가 대등하고, 이루려는 뜻이 유사하며, 판단과 의사 등이 합치되는 존재로서의 ‘벗[朋友]’은, 인간다움의 자각과 체득에 큰 도움을 제공한다. 또한 친구 관계에서의 최고 덕목은 ‘신의[信]’로, 『논어』에서 신의가 매우 높이 여겨지는 까닭은 신의의 유무가 곧 해당 인물의 도덕적 가능성과 됨됨이 및 인(仁)의 자각과 체득 정도를 평가하는 기준이 되기 때문이다. 그리고 이런 친구 관계에서 요구되는 자세는, 서로의 언행에 대해 충심을 다한 ‘권고[忠告]’와 올바른 길로 이끄는 ‘선도(善道)’라고 하겠다. ② 그런데 ‘인격 완성을 위한 존재로서의 벗’, ‘친구 사이의 최고 덕목으로서의 신의’, ‘친구 간의 서로 이끎을 뜻하는 선도’ 등을 통해 『논어』의 우정관을 체계화하는 과정에서, 각 소주제에 대한 논쟁점이 발견되었다. 그것은 세 가지로, ‘친구 선택이 나의 부족이나 결핍을 보완하기 위한 수단인가?’, ‘서로 신의가 있던 오랜 친구인데, 어떤 사건으로 인해 신의가 손상되면 어떻게 해야 할까?’, ‘욕을 자초하지 않으려면, 충고와 선도를 일정 범위에서 그쳐야만 하는가?’ 등이다. 그리고 이 물음들은 『논어』의 대표적인 주석서들로는 잘 해결되지 않는 바, 본 연구에서는 『우정에 관하여』를 연계해 현대적으로 풀이를 시도하였다. ③ 끝으로 본 연구에서는 후속 과제를 제언했는데, 하나는 참고 주석서들의 범위를 확장할 필요가 있다는 것이고, 다른 하나는 『논어』의 우정관을 활용하기 위한 교수･학습 방법 등이 개발되어야 한다는 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to consider the ‘view of friendship’ shown in . During the discussion process, the contents of the ancient Roman political scientist Cicero's were used to more consistently interpret controversial phrases within regarding friendship. On the premise of this purpose and methodology, In this study, we first looked at the meaning of friends in and the reason for making friends. ‘Friends’[朋友] as beings with equal relationships, similar intentions to achieve, and a combination of judgment and intention provide great help to the realization of humanity[仁]. In addition, ‘trust’[信] is the highest virtue in friendship, and the reason why trust is very emphasized in is that the presence or absence of trust serves as a criterion for evaluating a person's moral possibility and character. And the attitude required in this friendship is ‘advice on each other's words and actions’[忠告] and ‘recommendations that lead life in a moral direction’[善道]. ② However, in the process of organizing the ‘view of friendship’ of through ‘friends contributing to the completion of character’, ‘trust, the highest virtue between friends’, and ‘advice and recommendation between friends’, controversy was found in each item. There are three main things: ‘Is the choice of a friend a means to make up for my lack or deficiency?’, ‘What should I do if I have an old friend and trust is destroyed?’ and ‘If I don't want to be insulted, should I stop giving advice and recommendation?’ These questions were not well solved by the representative annotation books of , so in this study, we tried to solve them using . ③ Finally, this study suggested a follow-up task, one is that it is necessary to expand the scope of annotation books to refer to, and the other is that teaching methods to utilize the ‘view of friendship’ of should be developed.
