국문 초록

본고는 미디어 리터러시에 대해 설명하고 있는 전경란 저자의 『미디어 리터러시의 이해』에 대한 리뷰적 성격의 글이다. 필자가 이 책과 더불어 미디어 리터러시에 집중하는 이유는 현대사회의 많은 콘텐츠들이 미디어를 통해 생산·유통되고 있는 까닭에 현재 인류사는 미디어 사회라고 규정해도 큰 무리가 없을 만큼 미디어가 인간 삶의 양식 전체를 지배하고 있기 때문이다. 그런 의미에서 『미디어 리터러시의 이해』는 매우 시사하는 바가 크며 이 책은 미디어 리터러시의 기본적인 개념에서부터 출발하여 미디어 리터러시와 관련지으며 여러 학문분야와 장르로 확장 및 세분화된 다양한 미디어 리터러시의 개념들을 소개하면서 미디어 리터러시가 지닌 무한한 확장성을 강조하고 있다. 이 책의 구성은 크게 두 부분으로 나눌 수 있는데 앞부분은 주로 미디어 리터러시에 관한 이론적 설명으로 이루어져 있다. 리터러시의 기본적인 정의와 배경으로부터 출발하여 미디어 환경 변화에 따른 리터러시의 변화, 미디어 리터러시의 범위 등에 대해 체계적으로 상술하고 있다. 뒷부분에서는 이를 기반으로 미디어 리터러시로부터 세분화된 10가지 종류의 리터러시들을 소개하고 이들이 지닌 각각의 특징들을 설명한다. 특히 상기할 것은 저자는 미디어 러터러시를 ‘메타 리터러시(meta literacy)’로 규정하고 있다는 점이다. 미디어 리터러시가 다양한 명칭과 능력을 포함하는 개념으로 변모를 계속해왔다는 점에서 그리고 고착된 하나의 의미가 아니라 주어진 상황에 따라 지속적으로 확장해 온 다의적인 개념이라는 점을 기반으로 미디어 리터러시로부터 확장된 하위개념의 10가지 종류의 리터러시들을 함께 짚어보고 있는 것이다. 이렇듯 다양하고 복잡한 차원의 미디어 리터러시 개념과 그 맥락은 리터러시가 문자 중심의 소극적 이해 및 표현 능력에서 적극적이고 비판적인 이해와 활용 개념은 물론 좀 더 광범위한 사회적 개념으로 발전해왔음을 보여준다. 이는 또한 리터러시가 단순한 학습이나 교육 차원의 문제가 아니라 인간사의 문제 전체를 포괄하고 있음을 강력히 시사하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This article is a review of 『Understanding of Media Literacy』 written by the author, Jeon-kyung-ran, who explains media literacy. The reason I focus on media literacy along with this book is that many contents in modern society are produced and distributed through the media, so it is not too much of a stretch to define human history as a media society. because it dominates In that sense, 『Understanding Media Literacy』 is very suggestive, and this book starts with the basic concept of media literacy, introduces various concepts of media literacy that are related to media literacy, expanded and subdivided into various academic fields and genres, and media literacy. It emphasizes the infinite scalability of literacy. The structure of this book can be divided into two parts, and the first part mainly consists of theoretical explanations about media literacy. Starting from the basic definition and background of literacy, it systematically details the changes in literacy according to changes in the media environment and the scope of media literacy. In the latter part, based on this, 10 types of literacy subdivided from media literacy are introduced and their respective characteristics are explained. In particular, it is worth remembering that the author defines media literacy as 'meta literacy'. Based on the fact that media literacy has continued to transform into a concept that includes various names and abilities, and that it is not a fixed meaning but a multi-semantic concept that has been continuously expanded according to the given situation, the sub-concept that has been expanded from media literacy We are looking at 10 types of literacy together. This diverse and complex concept of media literacy and its contexts show that literacy has evolved from a text-oriented passive understanding and expression ability to an active and critical understanding and utilization concept as well as a broader social concept. This also strongly suggests that literacy is not simply a matter of learning or education, but encompasses the whole of human affairs.
