국문 초록

이 글은 한국 근대미술의 요람으로서 서울 서촌의 화가와 예술가들 이야기를 다루고 있는 재야의 미술사학자 황정수의 『경성의 화가들, 근대를 거닐다(서촌편)』(2022)에 대한 서평이다. 황정수의 이 책은 저자가 서울의 북촌 지역에 오랫동안 거주하면서 여러 화가, 미술인들과 교유하면서 직접, 혹은 간접으로 전해 들은 이야기를 바탕으로 책의 전체 내용을 구성하면서 19세기 말에서 20세기 초반과 현재에 이르기까지 한국 근대미술의 주역들에 관한 이야기를 소개하고 있다. 서촌은 서울이라는 공간의 인문적 특징을 가장 전형적으로 간직하고 있는 삶의 장소로서 이전부터 예술인들이 많이 모여 살았고, 현재에도 여러 유형의 아티스트와 건축가와 디자이너와 예술가들, 시민 활동가들이 직접 거주하며 미래를 향한 새로운 창작 활동을 모색하고 있는 공간이다. 예술가들이 모여 일상을 살아오면서 작품을 창작하고 교류하는 특별한 장소를 예술인마을이라고 한다면, 서울의 인왕산 아래 경복궁 근처에 위치한 서촌은 인근의 북촌과 함께 한국을 대표하는 문화예술인들이 서로 만남을 나누고, 작품 활동을 하였던 한국의 대표적인 예술인마을의 여러 특징들을 간직하고 있는 곳으로서 도시인문학적 탐구의 텍스트가 되고 있다. 황정수의 『경성의 화가들, 근대를 거닐다(서촌편)』은 서촌 지역에 거주하며 교류하였던 일제 강점기 근대 한국 화가들의 인문적 교류에 관한 이야기 문화사를 서술하고 있는 책이다. 나아가 이 책은 일제 강점기에 한국인 화가들에게 영향을 준 일본인 교사와 한국인 화가들의 교류 및 영향 관계를 소개하고 있으며, 이념의 차이에 따라 북으로 넘어간 월북 화가들을 다루면서 그들에 대한 관심과 연구가 새롭게 이루어져야 우리 근대미술사의 공백이 메워질 수 있다는 생각을 피력하고 있는 책으로서 의미를 지니고 있다.

영문 초록

This article is a book review of Painters in Gyeong-seong, Strolling in Modern TimesTimes(Seo-chon)(chon)(2022), a local art historian, Hwang Jeong-su, which deals with the stories of painters and artists in Seo-chon(西村), Seoul, as the cradle of Korean modern art. This book by Hwang Jeong-soo is based on the story that the author heard directly or indirectly while living in the Buk-chon(北村) area of Seoul for a long time and interacting with various painters and artists. It introduces the stories of the protagonists of Korean modern art up to the present. Seo-chon is a living space that most typically retains the characteristics of Seoul’s humanistic space, where many artists have lived together before, and even today, various types of artists, architects, designers, artists, and civic activists live and shape the future. It is also a space for seeking new creative activities toward the future. If an artist village is a special place where artists gather to create and exchange works while living their daily lives, Seo-chon, located near Gyeongbokgung Palace under Mt. In-wang of Seoul. As a place that retains many characteristics of Korea’s representative artist’s village, it has become a text for urban humanistic exploration. Hwang Jeong-soo’s Painters in Gyeong-seong, Strolling in Modern TimesPainters Times (Seo-(Seo-chon) is a book that describes the cultural history of modern Korean painters living and interacting in the Seo-chon area during the Japanese colonial era. Furthermore, this book introduces the exchange and influence relationship between Japanese teachers and Korean painters who influenced Korean painters during the Japanese colonial period. It is meaningful as a book that expresses the idea that only when this is done can the gap in our modern art history be filled.
