《토지》의 서희와 《바람과 함께 사라지다》의 스칼렛 오하라의 인물 연구

국문 초록

본고는 한국과 미국을 대표하는 장편 대하소설 중에 하나인 박경리의《토지》와 마가렛 미첼의《바람과 함께 사라지다》를 ‘땅의 가치와 소망’을 중심으로 고찰했다. 두 소설은 여성 작가라는 공통점 이외에 영화와 드라마로도 만들어져 대중성과 작품성을 인정받았으며, 최근에는 각각 자국을 대표하는 문화 콘텐츠로서 각광을 받고 있다. 우선 두 소설은 한국과 미국을 대표하는 장편 대하소설로서, 각기 두 나라의 국민성과 역사성을 상징하는 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 중요한 것은 이들 두 여주인공들이 ‘여성’이라는 당대 사회의 여러 제약 조건에도 불구하고 일관되게 소설의 흐름을 이끌고 있다는 것이며, 영락한 가문의 복원이 두 여성의 삶을 견인하는 요소로 작용 한다는 것이다. 본고에서는 두 소설의 논의의 전개를 ‘시대적 상황과 비교’, ‘땅과 토지의 모성과 욕망’, ‘한의 정서와 프론티어 정신’, ‘애증으로 점철된 양가적 대상’으로 각기 나누어 고찰했다. 두 소설의 시대적 상황은 ‘일제 강점기’와 ‘남북전쟁’이라는 각기 미증유의 민족의 혼란기를 역사적 배경으로 하고 있으며, 훼손된 고향인 ‘평사리’와 ‘타라’의 복구가 중심축을 이룬다. ‘땅과 토지의 모성과 욕망’에서는 모성인 땅이 욕망의 속성을 갖는 토지로 변질되는 과정을 주목했다. ‘한의 정서와 프론티어 정신’에서는 한국의 ‘한(恨)’의 정서와 미국의 ‘프론티어’ 정신이 이들 두 주인공의 삶을 입체적으로 견인하는 과정을 살펴보았다. ‘애증으로 점철된 양가적 대상’에서는 가문에 대한 미움과 사랑을 고찰했다. 가문의 복구가 이들 삶의 궁극이지만, 이들의 가문의 복구는 치열한 자기부정을 통한 여정이었음을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

In this thesis, the researcher examined 《Land》by Park, Kyoung-Ri and 《Gone with the Wind》by Margaret Mitchell focusing on 'value of land and wish' as these books are the representative epic novel of Korea and United States of America. Both novels were written by 'female writer' and these have something in common that the popularity and quality of novel were recognized through the reproduction into movie and drama respectively. Recently, the novels are greatly esteemed as the representative cultural contents of each country. First of all, two novels are the representative epic novels and it can be said that these contain the character of the nation and history of respective country. However, the important thing is that in spite of social restrictions, the heroins of the novels were leading the story of novel and reconstruction of ruined family acted as the dynamic factor of their life. In this thesis, the researcher reviewed the development of discussion regarding two novels by dividing into 'the circumstances of times and comparison', 'motherhood and desire of land and earth', 'the feeling of regret and frontier mind set' and 'the object of ambivalent studded with love and hatred'. The background of two novels was based on 'the times of Chaos such as Japan's colony' and 'American Civil War' and the reconstruction of ruined hometown 'Pyungsari' and 'Tara' became the essence of the story. In 'motherhood and desire of land and earth', the researcher focused on the changed course of earth symbolizing motherhood into land through capitalization. In 'the feeling of regret and frontier mind set', the researcher looked into how 'regret' feeling of Korea and 'frontier mind set' of America encouraged two heroins to lead their life intensively. In 'the object of ambivalent studded with love and hatred', the researcher examined the hatred and love toward family. It was noted that the reconstruction of the family was their ultimate aim of life but, this construction was a long journey through intensive self-denial.
