토론을 활용한 작문교육의 효율성에 대한 시론

국문 초록

대학에서의 작문교육이 의사소통 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 교육으로 바뀌고 있다. 그런데 대학에서의 작문교육은 현실적으로 세 가지 어려움에 처해 있다. 작문을 전공하지 않은 비전공자가 담당하는 경우가 많고, 학습자들은 글을 써본 경험이 적거나 작문교육의 필요성을 이해하지 못하며, 한 강좌당 학습자의 수가 많다는 점이다. 그래서 가르치는 사람이나 학생 모두 만족도가 떨어진다는 점이다. 작문교육에서 토론을 활용하면 이와 같은 문제는 어느 정도 해결할 수 있어 수업을 효율적으로 운영할 수 있다. 가르치는 사람에게는 이론 교육이나 첨삭 지도에 대한 부담을 덜 수 있고, 학습자들에게는 토론을 통한 능동적 참여를 통해 작문의 과정을 익힐 수 있도록 해준다. 또한 조별 활동을 통해 수업이 진행되어 학습자의 수가 많더라도 효율적으로 수업을 운영할 수 있게 된다. 토론의 준비를 통해 학습자들은 전략적 사고의 과정을 경험할 수 있으며, 실제 토론을 통해 부족한 부분을 깨닫게 된다. 이와 같은 일련의 과정을 통해 글을 쓰는 과정을 이해하게 되고, 보다 나은 글을 작성하기 위한 훈련을 할 수 있을 것이다. 다만 토론이라는 외적인 형식에 연연할 경우 이론 교육이나 표현 교육의 기회를 제한할 수 있어 교육내용의 적절한 조화가 필요하다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that in writing instruction, using a debate allows instructors to educate students efficiently. Writing instruction of university has three practical problems. First, in many cases, a person who didn't specialized in writing teaches students writing. Second, students have little experience of writing and don't feel the necessity of writing. Finally, as there are too many students in one class, it isn't effective to teach them. A debate allows instructors to overcome these problems effectively. Recently, writing instruction in university is changing to a communicative approach. Accordingly, the focus is more on mastering processes of thinking than expressing it. A debate, especially an academic debate, is suitable for a thinking-centered education. Using a debate in writing instruction can help to reduce difficulties while instructors who didn't specialize in writing instruction teach students. It is because the focus should be on the development of logic than grammar or the Korean usage stipulation. And also, a debate is useful motivating students to learn. Unlike writing which is activity of stillness, students become aggressive in the way that a debate is dynamic and there are winners in it. And a debate can make learning by team possible, which to some extent, lightens instructors' burden by the number of students. Nevertheless, there is a things that instructors must keep in mind when they use a debate in writing instruction. It is that a debate is a tool for writing instruction. The purpose of this class isn't to master the form or the skill of a debate. The purpose of this class is to develop one's ability for writing through the preparation of a debate. Therefore, it is necessary for instructors to remind learners not to forget it.
