국문 초록

이 연구에서는 중학생의 어휘 발달과 어휘력에 대하여 살펴보고, 국어교육 내 어휘 교육의 위상과 중학교 어휘 교육의 목표에 대하여 살펴보았다. 또 현행 국어과 교육과정의 중학교 어휘 교육 내용과 방법의 문제점을 지적하였다. 국어과에서 어휘 교육은 어휘가 별도의 하위 영역으로 설정되어 있지 않은 채 문법 영역에서 어휘와 관련된 국어학적 지식 이해와 적용 중심으로 이루어져 왔고, 이는 초등학교와 중학교에 큰 차이가 없다. 단지 중학교에서는 문법 이외 영역에서 해당 영역 고유의 학습에 치중하다 보니, 간접적으로라도 어휘와 관련이 되는 교육 내용이 초등학교에 비하여 현저히 적다는 차이가 있다. 또 현행 국어과 교육과정에는 중학교 어휘 교육을 위한 교수-학습 방안이 별도로 제시되어 있지는 않으며, 전 영역에 걸쳐 국어 자료에 제시된 새 단어의 발음, 뜻, 표기 등을 유의해 지도할 것을 강조하고 있다. 이에 이 연구에서는 중학교 어휘 교육 문제를 개선할 수 있는 여섯 가지 방안을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The present study aims to elucidate the vocabulary development of the middle school students and to investigate the current status of the vocabulary education and the aims of the middle school vocabulary education. In addition, it pointed out the problems in the contents and methods of middle school vocabulary education within the Korean curriculum. The Korean vocabulary education for either the elementary or middle school has not been an independent subordinate field but has been centered on understanding and applying the Korean knowledge related to the vocabulary under the grammar field. The vocabulary education material for middle school level is much smaller in quantity, compared with that for the elementary school level, since the curricula are more centered on the specific contents of each field. Besides, the current Korean curricula for middle school does not provide teaching-learning methods for the vocabulary education. Instead, they emphasize that the teachers should concern about the pronunciation, meaning, and spelling of a new word in the education material across various fields of Korean education. Thus, the present study suggests six ways of improving the vocabulary education for middle school.
