국문 초록

‘디지털미디어’라는 개념이 이제 더 이상 ‘뉴미디어’라고 느껴지지 않을 만큼 일상의 모든 분야에서 자연스러워졌다. 미디어가 인간 본질을 정의하고 의식의 크기를 규정한다는 오래된 미디어이론을 기반으로 했을 때, 이제 ‘디지털’이라는 당연한 미디어에서 자유로울 수 있는 영역은 없다. 문학과 소설도 마찬가지이다. 아니, 오히려 문학이고 소설이기 때문에, 타인과 ‘이야기’를 ‘소통’하기 위해 탄생한 ‘디지털’을 더욱 운명처럼 만날 수밖에 없다. 지속적이고 집요하게 논의되어 온 소설의 의미와 가치를 다 내려놓더라도, 역시 ‘이야기성’과 ‘소통’은 소설의 기본값이기 때문이다. 본 연구는, ‘운명’처럼 만날 수밖에 없었던 디지털이라는 플랫폼과 소설이라는 이야기매체가 현재적으로 어떤 형상을 띄며 구현되고 있는지를 분석하는데 목표를 두고 있다. 이미 1990년대부터 온라인을 통한 서사물은 소설의 하위장르의 형식으로 다양하게 창작, 배포, 전시되어 왔다. 그 중에서도 본 연구가 분석하기 위해 선택한 텍스트는 2013년에 네이버에서 연재된 후, 바로 단행본으로 출판된 조정래의 <정글만리>이다. 그 이유는 분명하다. 네이버, 조정래, 중국, 자본, 성공 같은 표면적인 키워드만으로도 충분히 자극적이고 흥미로운 소설임에 분명하지만, <정글만리>가 가지고 있는 특징은 그 뿐만이 아니다. 연재와 출판과정에서 일종의 ‘신드롬’적 현상을 보일만큼 놀라운 대중적 열광을 보였기 때문이다. ‘대중’의 가치가 사라진지가 언제인지 모를 만큼 오래된 작금의 출판계가 <정글만리>를 통해 잊고 있었던 활기를 환상처럼 되찾은 것이다. 재미있는 현상은, <정글만리>에 대한 대중적 열광의 크기와 문학계의 우려와 고민의 정도가 비례한다는 사실이다. 소설이라는 매체가 가져야 하는, 그리고 지키고 싶은 속성을 상실할까 하는 우려는 충분히 이해되고 물론 타당하다. 그러나 조금만 프레임을 달리해서 본다면, 이미 소설은 ‘디지털’이 되고, 디지털은 ‘소설’이 되는 과정 속에서 ‘원래’ 가지고 있어야만 하는 소설의 제 역할을 충분히 하고 있는 것인지도 모른다. 바로 ‘한 시대의 공동체적 전망과 욕망’을 공유하고 소통하는 기능 말이다. 그렇다면, 우리는 <정글만리>의 두드러진 서사적 특성을 분석하는 과정을 통해 디지털 시대의 새로운 서사주체라고 할 수 있는 대중들의 ‘이야기’를 들어 볼 수 있을 것이다. 비록, 그들의 ‘이야기’가 때론 위선적이고, 작위적이고, 공상적이라도 말이다. 그런 모순적인 인간의 속성까지 ‘사실적’으로 받아들이고 감당해야 하는 것이 변치 않는 ‘소설’ 매체의 숙명일지도 모른다.

영문 초록

Digital media have already become a natural phenomenon and should not be considered “new media.” In fact, the media define human nature as well as human perception; presently, there is no area of freedom from the media with regard to the “digital” arena. The same is true of literature, and in particular the focus of this study, the novel. In a certain sense, producers of novels had no choice but to connect with the digital format, which was created to allow us to “talk” and “communicate” with others. Therefore, let us confirm the meaning and value of the novel, which has been continuously discussed for some time. Still, “story” and “communication” are also the most basic characteristics of novels. This study was based on the digital platform and the fiction genre of literature, which were naturally bound to meet. The goal is to analyze how these two forms of media connect and how they are implemented. Since the 1990s, epic works have been created, distributed, and displayed in various online formats. Accordingly, the text chosen by this study for analysis is the 2013 novel, The Human Jungle(by Cho Jung-rae). This is because The Human Jungle has provocative keywords such as “Naver,” “Cho Jung-rae,” “China,” “capital,” and “success.” In addition, the novel was so popular that it was termed a “syndrome” in the process of serialization and publication. Subsequently, the publishing industry, which has been shunned by the public, has long since been revitalized. An interesting phenomenon is that the worries and anxieties of the literary world have grown in proportion with the enthusiasm of the public through concerns that novels will lose their unique attributes. However, from a slightly different perspective, we may say the novel is already doing its part within the digital platform. Novels become digital, and the digital format plays a significant role in the process of the author’s work becoming a successful novel. It is the functional narrative that communicates the “community outlook and desire of an era.” Presently, a new “popularity” can be identified through the process of analyzing the narrative characteristics of The Human Jungle. Even if its stories and characters seem hypocritical, contrived, and fanciful, that is because the novel reflects even such contradictory human figures as “realistic.”
