중학교 영어교과서 듣기자료의 Coh-Metrix 측정치에 대한 연계성 분석

국문 초록

본 논문은 광범위한 유형의 언어학 및 심리언어학적 측정치에 기초해 여러 가지 유형의 텍스트와 담화를 분석하는 Coh-Metrix 시스템을 이용하여 2009년에 개정되어 현재 학교 현장에서 사용 중인 중학교 1, 2, 3학년 영어교과서 듣기자료의 연계성을 통계로 분석하였다. 본 연구에 사용된 Coh-Metrix 시스템은 미국 멤피스대학교 지능형시스템연구소에서 개발한 자동 언어분석 프로그램으로 다양한 유형의 언어학 및 심리언어학적 측정치를 제공하는데 본 연구에서는 영어교과서 듣기 자료의 연계성을 분석하기 위해 기초 산출치, 단어빈도수, 표준가독성지표, 통사적 복잡성, 어휘다양성, 참조적 정합성, 의미적 정합성 측정치를 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과 개정 중학교 영어교과서 듣기자료는 단어 수, 문장 수, 단어빈도수, 표준가독성지표, 본동사 앞 단어수 측정치에 대해서는 학년별로 연계성이 잘 성립되었음이 시사되었다. 그러나, 명사구밀도, 어휘다양성, 참조적 정합성, 의미적 정합성 측정치에 대해서는 학년별 연계성이 잘 성립되지 않았음이 제시되었다. 본 연구의 통계적 자료 분석 결과는 차후 영어교과서 집필 시 유용하게 적용될 수 있는 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study investigated the continuity of the listening data in the Korean middle school English textbooks using Coh-Metrix, a computer program that can analyze text and discourse based on a wide range of linguistic and psycholinguistic measures on different components of readability and language. The measures of Coh-Metrix for this study contained basic count (the number of word, the number of sentence), word frequency, standard readability indices (Flesch reading ease score, Flesch-Kincaid grade level), syntactic complexity (the number of words before main verb, noun density), lexical diversity (type-token ratio), co-reference cohesion (argument overlap score), semantic cohesion (LSA cosine score). Our findings showed that the continuity of the listening data in the Korean middle school English textbooks was well established for the number of word, the number of sentence, word frequency, standard readability indices, and the number of words before main verb measures. However, the continuity among the textbooks was not well constructed for the noun density, lexical diversity, co-referential cohesion, and semantic cohesion measures. Our findings contain critical implications for the design of school English textbooks.
