보험영업손익과 투자영업손익의 연관성에 관한 실증연구

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 손해보험회사의 보험영업손익과 투자영업손익의 관계를 이익조정 가능성 측면에서 고찰하였다. 본 논문의 목적은 손해보험회사의 보험영업부문 성과가 좋지 않은 경우 이를 보전하기 위하여 투자영업부문의 성과를 조정하는 행위가 있다는 일각의 주장에 대해, 합리적인 근거가 있는 것인지에 대해 검토하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 국내 주식시장에 상장된 손해보험회사의 2006회계연도부터 2015회계연도까지의 자료를 이용하여 실증분석 하였다. 연구결과, 손해보험회사의 투자영업손익 변화는 보험영업손익의 변화와 유의한 음(-)의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났고, 재량적 대손충당금 설정액으로 구분한 이익조정 의심표본의 경우 그렇지 않은 경우보다 두 부문 손익의 음(-)의 관계가 더욱 강력한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 보험영업이익의 감소 또는 손실액을 투자영업이익의 상향조정으로 보전하는 이익조정 현상이 실제로 존재한다는 주장에 대한 신뢰성을 높이는 결과로 해석된다.

영문 초록

In this paper, we examined the relation between insurance and investment operating income from the earnings management point of view. The goal of this paper is to examine whether there is a rational ground in the assertion that non-life insurance companies manage their investment operating incomes to make up for their insurance operating income decreases. We examined the assertion with samples consisting of listed non-life insurance companies which reported annual financial data over the year 2006 to 2015. The empirical result of this study is that there is a significant negative relation between investment and insurance operating income changes. And we find a additional evidence that this negative relation between investment and insurance operating income changes is more strong in the samples with negative discretionary loan loss provisions. The results are consistent with the argument that there is an earnings management in the investment operating section in the non-life insurance industry.
