Determinants of Individual Businesses Rate: Application of Logistic Quantile Regression

영문 초록

Using the economy census survey and economically active population survey in 2011, we find that only in manufacturing industries, higher unemployment rate is associated with greater individual business rate. This positive correlation between unemployment rate and individual business rate supports unemployment push hypothesis. Also tax burden on individual business turns out to suppress individual business rate and this negative effect of individual business taxes holds only at industries with lower percentile of individual business rate. Lastly, higher rate of operating profits by individual business is shown to attract more individual business and this phenomenon is more likely to be observed at industries with higher percentile of individual business rate. Our empirical finding suggests that quantile regression approach should be employed in analyzing determinants of individual business rate or self-employment rate because there exists a significant difference in empirical results between OLS with logistic transformation and logistic quantile regression approach.
