Can Flipped Learning Benefit English Language Teaching ESL Teacher Education: What Do We Know, and Where Do We Go?

국문 초록

플립트 러닝이 영어 교육에 미치는 영향: 선행연구 분석을 중심으로 미국의 수학, 과학 중심과정(STEM Education)에서 시작된 플립트 러닝 (Flipped Learning)은, 학습자 중심의 교수학습 방법으로 최근 국내에서도 많은 관심을 받고 있다. 선행 연구에 따르면 플립트 러닝은 블랜드 러닝 (Blended Learning) 의 한 가지 형태로써, 교수자가 온라인 학습을 적절히 이용하여 유연한 학습 환경을 조성할 수 있고, 학습자의 입장에서는 다양한 활동을 통하여 고차원적이면서 자기주도적인 사고를 진행할 수 있다고 분석되었다. 하지만 대부분의 플립트 러닝의 선행연구가 수학, 과학중심 분야에서 주로 진행 된 것을 고려해볼 때, 영어교육과 교사교육 분야의 플립트 러닝에 관한 연구는 상대적으로 부족한 실정이다. 이러한 이유로, 본 연구에서는 영어교육 분야와 교사교육 분야에서의 플립트 러닝 적용을 정리하고 분석하여, 앞으로 어떻게 플립트 러닝 연구가 현재 교육 상황에 더욱 적합하게 적용할 수 있는지 제안하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Research on implementing a flipped classroom has emerged as an innovative teaching method in K-12 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classrooms in the past decade. Previous research argues that the flipped classroom helps increase student motivation for learning, fosters learner autonomy, and promotes higher-order thinking skills. In addition, the flipped classroom provides various benefits to instructors, such as allowing for more effective use of class time, creating flexible delivery options such as using online instruction, and increasing meaningful interactions between students and instructors. Although evidence of the effectiveness of flipped learning in K-12 classrooms has revealed several benefits, previous research regarding the English language teaching area and teacher education programs have not been fully explored. As such, this paper aims to review previous studies and provide suggestions on how teacher educators can create a flipped learning environment to stimulate pre-service teachers’ authentic and meaningful learning experiences in ESL teacher education courses.
