국문 초록

제주 섬 전체가 개발 광풍에 휩싸여 있는 이유는 제주 사람이 아닌 ‘타자(他者)’에게서 찾아야 한다. 지금까지 제주를 척박한 땅으로 호명했던 것도, 신자유주의가 비껴난 핫플레이스로 호명하고 있는 것도 타자이기 때문이다. 제주 사람은 타자들의 이러한 호명에 충실하게 응답할 뿐 아니라, 스스로를 소외시킨다. 이러한 문제의식의 연장선에서 제주사회에 서구적 근대성이 침투하기 시작한 한말시기에 주목하려고 한다. 개발이 필요하다는 제주 사람의 인식은 서구적 근대성에 기초한 한국사회의 근대화, 산업화 과정에서 만들어진 것이기 때문이다. 특히 이 연구에서는 한말 천주교회 조선인 성직자가 제주를 어떻게 인식했는지를 통해서 문제점의 원인을 파악하려고 한다. 한말 천주교회 조선인 성직자는 천주교 신앙과 서구식 교육을 통해 서양적 가치관과 지식을 내면화한 인물이라는 독특한 정체성을 가지기 때문이다. 이 점을 밝히기 위해, 우선 한말 천주교회의 선교지 인식과 제주사회에 대한 인식을 검토하였다. 당시 서양인선교사들의 눈에 비친 조선과 제주가 계몽과 구원의 대상이었다는 점은 새삼스러운 일이 아니다. 그런데 조선인 성직자들에게서 이런 인식이 좀 더 강화된 형태로 드러난 이유를 살펴보기 위해, 조선인 성직자들의 양성과정을 살펴보았다. 이렇게 양성된 조선인 성직자들 가운데서 특히 1899년에 제주도에 최초로 파견된 김원영 신부의 저서인 『수신영약(修身靈藥)』을 분석하였다. 이 책에서는 제주의 풍습과 민간신앙을 다루고 있는데, 서양인보다도 오히려 더 계몽주의적 태도로 조국 조선을 평가하면서 조선의 변방인 제주를 이해하는 조선인 성직자의 태도가 분명하게 드러나 있다. 이를 통해 중심부로부터 제주사회에 이식된 타자의 시선의 실체와 내용을 짐작해볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

The reason why the whole Jeju island is overwhelmed by development craze should be found not by Jeju residents but by ‘others.’ It is because others had been calling Jeju a barren land and a hot place where neoliberalism deviated. Jeju residents not only sincerely respond to the call of others but also estrange themselves. From the critical mind, this study is going to pay attention to the late period of Joseon when western modernization infiltrated. It is because the cognition of Jeju residents that development is required was created in the course of modernization and industrialization of the Korean society based on western modernization. In particular, this study is going to examine the causes of the problems through the cognition of the Catholic priest of Joseon of Jeju in the late period of Joseon. It was because the Catholic priest of Joseon in the last Joseon has a unique identity that they internalized western values and knowledge through the Catholic religion and western education. In order to disclose this point, this study reviewed the cognition of the Catholic priest of Joseon in the late Joseon and the Juju society. At that time, it was not new at all that Joseon and Jeju considered by the western missionary were the objects for enlightenment and salvation. However, it examined the training course of the Catholic priest of Joseon in order to understand the reasons why this cognition of the Catholic priest of Joseon became reinforced, In particular, Susinyeongyak(修身靈藥) written by priest, Wonyeong Kim(金元永, 1869-1936), who was dispatched for the first time to Jeju in 1899 was analyzed among the Catholic priest of Joseon trained in this way. This book handled the customs and folk beliefs of Jeju, evaluated Joseon in a more enlightened attitude than Westerners, and clearly described the attitude of a Catholic priest of Joseon, who understood Jeju, a backwater of Joseon. Through this, the actual conditions and contents of other’s viewpoint implanted into the Jeju society from the center can be guessed.
