국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 질병 인식의 역사적 변화를 추적함으로써 사회적 경험 및 실천으로서 질병이 사회적으로 구성되는 방식을 분석하고, 이를 통해 자연과학적인 질병관과 병에 대한 문화적이고 인문학적인 접근이라는 이분법을 넘어서 융합적 연구의 가능성을 모색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 질병이 객관적인 사실로서 존재하고 거기에 대한 대응으로서 치료 방식이 개발되는 것이라는 사회적 통념에 대해 문제제기 하면서, 반대로 질병에 대해 개입할 수 있는 새로운 수단이 생겨나는 과정, 다시 말해 치료의 가능성 자체가 의학적 지식과 대중에게 인식되는 질병 모두의 차원에서 질병의 이해에 대해 큰 변화를 가져왔음을 보이고자 한다. 본 논문에서 연구대상으로 삼은 질병의 사례는 고혈압인데, 의학적인 질병으로서의 고혈압은 사실상 혈압을 측정하는 방법이 정립되는 것과 그 시작을 같이 하지만 그 측정 방식에서는 한 세기가 넘는 시간 동안 큰 변화가 없었다는 점에서 질병의 사회적 구성을 살펴보는데 흥미로운 사례를 제공해 줄 수 있다. 연구의 결과는 의학적인 질병으로서의 고혈압과 현재 대중들이 이해하는 고혈압에 대한 인식, 양쪽 모두에서 시간 경과에 따른 변화가 있으며, 그 변화는 고혈압에 대한 다양한 개입 방식이 등장하고 사라지는 것과 관계가 있음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibilities of a convergence study of disease, illness and culture, beyond the dichotomy of a natural science approach to diseases and a cultural and humanistic approach to diseases. By examining the ways in which historical changes in disease perception have taken place, this paper emphasizes the disease as social experiences and practices. To this end, this paper questions the widespread ideas that disease exists as an objective fact and that treatment is developed as a response to it, and argues that, on the contrary, new means of intervening in disease has significantly changed not just the popular perception of disease but also medical knowledges as such. For this purpose, this paper will study the case of hypertension. Hypertension as a medical illness can provide an interesting example of a socially constructed disease, since there has been no major change in the way the disease is being measured and defined over the course of a century. The results of the study show that hypertension as a disease practiced in medical profession and hypertension as an illness experienced by the people both have substantially changed over time and that this change is related to the emergence and disappearance of various interventions for hypertension.
