국문 초록

이 논문은 문순태의 <철쭉제>를 통하여 작중인물의 내적 갈등이 시간의 흐름에 따라서 변화되는 과정과 그 의미를 서사 전략적 측면에서 읽어낸 것이다. 주지하다시피 ‘서사’라는 개념은 하나의 사건을 지칭하기도 하고, 등장인물의 행동이나 상황에 얽혀 있는 총체성을 말하기도 한다. 나아가 누군가가 무엇을 이야기하는 사건인 서술행위 자체의 의미까지 내포한다. 문순태의 <철쭉제>에서는 소급 제시, 지속, 중첩반복 등의 서사전략이 활용되었다. 우선, 이 소설은 엿새 동안의 짧은 서술시간을 활용하여 봉건사회에서 파렴치하게 살아 온 박 검사의 조부부터 한국전쟁을 전후로 한 부친의 모습까지 박판돌의 입을 통하여 소급제시 된다. 둘째, <철쭉제>는 박 검사와 박판돌의 엿새 동안의 동행서사가 핵심을 이루고 있다는 점이다. 그러나 이 소설의 시간적 배경은 박 검사와 박판돌의 조부 때부터 얽혀있던 비극적이고 충격적인 사건까지 서술되어 있다. 끝으로 시간 요소 중 하나인 빈도는 사건이 스토리 속에 나오는 횟수와의 관계인데, <철쭉제>에서는 ‘30년 동안’ 복수를 결심한 박 검사의 심정이 중첩반복 된다. 30년 이라는 시간에는 박 검사의 울적함, 놀람, 공포 등의 복합적 심리가 그대로 투영되었다. 또한 박 검사는 박판돌과 엿새 동안 지리산을 동행하면서 그에 대하여 무서움을 느끼게 되는데, 이러한 심리적 기제가 반복적으로 제시되어 그의 내적 갈등이 변화되는 과정을 읽어낼 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the process and significance of narrative strategy in transforming internal characters’ conflicts according to the flow of time through the of Mun Sun-tae. As you know, the concept of ‘narrative’ refers to a single event, or to the totality entangled in the behavior or situation of a character. Furthermore, it has the meaning of the narrative act itself, which is the event in which someone talks. It can be seen that the proportion of narratives in prose literature is considerable. In particular, this paper focuses on Rimmon-Kenan’s argument that the experience of time can be reproduced in narrative texts. First, Mun Sun-tae’s used narrative strategies such as retrospective presentation, pre - presentation, continuation, overlapping repetition. First of all, this novel is presented retrospectively through the mouth of the papyrus after the father of prosecuter Park, who lived in a feudal society in a short time during six days. That is, the description time is returned to the past. Mun Sun-tae brings a dramatic reversal through the use of these narrative strategies. Second, the consists of a six-day narrative accompanied by a prosecuter Park and Park Pan-dol. But in this novel, the current time is not all six days. The fact that these characters are experiencing the tragedy and shocking events of their family over 30 years ago is not so short. Finally, the frequency of one of the time elements is the relationship of the number of times the event occurs in the story. In , prosecuter Park’s testimony which decides to revenge for “30 years” is overlaid repeatedly. During the 30 years, Mr. Park has felt a sense of calm, surprise, fear, and sincerity, and this is in 30 years time. In addition, Park will feel his fear as he accompanies the sheet metal for 6 days, which is also repeatedly emphasized.
