사띠의 심신치유적 기능에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

현대사회를 특징짓는 단어 가운데 하나를 든다면, 무엇을 들 수 있을까. 사람마다 다를 수 있겠지만, 필자는 ‘치유’라는 단어를 들고 싶다. ‘치유’란 개념이 지시하는 것은 ‘불건전한 심신의 상태를 건전한 상태로 되돌리는 것’을 의미할 것이다. 이는 본래적 기능을 회복한다는 의미를 함축한다고 할 수 있다. 심신의 불건강함 이전의 상태로 되돌리는 것, 그것이 ‘치유’이다. 본 논문은 ‘명상’에 주목하여, 심신의 치유적 기제에 대한 내용을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 그 가운데에서도 초기불교의 수행론을 언급하면서 빼놓을 수 없는 요소인 ‘사띠(sati)’가 지닌 심신치유적 기제를 다루고자 한다. 비록 사띠가 초기불교 수행론의 핵심요소이긴 하지만, 초기불교적 수행론의 틀 속에서만 한정해서 문제를 다루지 않고, 사띠의 특성을 분류하고 그에 따라 현대인이 필요로 하는 심신치유적 기능에 포인트를 두고 논의를 진행하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본문에서는 먼저 초기불교 수행론에서 사띠의 특성이 어떻게 제시되고 설명되고 있는지를 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 오늘날에 적용할 수 있는 방법론을 살펴보는 순서로 논의할 것이다.

영문 초록

If we take one of the words that characterize modern society, what can we say? It may vary from person to person, but I want to take the word ‘healing’. The concept of ‘healing’ would mean ‘returning a state of unhealthy mind and body to a healthy state’. This implies that the original function is recovered. Returning to the state before the unhealthy of mind and body, it is ‘healing’. This paper focuses on ‘meditation’ and examines the contents of the mind and body of the healing mechanism. Among them, we want to deal with the spiritual and healing mechanisms of sati, an indispensable factor in referring to early Buddhist practice. Although sati is a core element of early Buddhist practice, it does not deal with the problem only in the frame work of early Buddhist doctrines, classifying the characteristics of sati, and thus discussing the points of mind and healing function that modern man needs I want to proceed. To this end, the text first examines how the characteristics of sati are presented and explained in the early Buddhist practice, and discusses the methodology that can be applied today.
