수학 대중화를 위한 정부의 역할과 정책 방향

국문 초록

본 연구는 국가ㆍ산업ㆍ학문적 측면에서 최근 그 중요성이 부각되는 수학의 활용성 제고를 위해, 혼합적 연구방법을 통해 수학문화에 대한 대중의 인식 기저를 확인하고 이를 근거로 수학문화 확산을 위한 수학 대중화 정책방안을 제언하였다. 연구 결과, 수학문화와 관련된 대중의 인식은 대체로 ‘입시’와 연관되어 있었고 학교교육의 범주 안에 국한된 것으로 나타났다. 반면 수학이 인류에 주는 혜택, 사회ㆍ문화적 문제해결에 기여하는 수학의 본연적 가치와 활용성에 대한 대중의 인식은 확인되지 않았다. 이어서 수학 대중화를 달성하기 위한 정책방안 도출 결과, 수학 학습 환경 개선이 가장 근원적인 방안으로 나타났고, 현재 열악한 수학 관련 전문 인력의 체계적인 양성 및 지원을 강화할 필요가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 더불어 대중과의 거리감을 줄이고 일상에서의 활용을 보편화할 수 있도록 TV 예능, 드라마와 같은 문화콘텐츠를 적극적으로 활용하는 정책 수단이 필요한 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Mathematics is increasingly seen as an important academic field for national and economic growth policy. However, policy for popularization of Mathematics design has been underpinned largely by anecdotal evidence and without a clear theoretical basis for understanding how the populace recognize the mathematics and in what ways desirable policies can be promoted for diffusion of mathematics culture. The analysis study designed as a reality check focuses on the perception of the populace regarding mathematics culture, using the semantic network analysis with text mining in R and in-depth interview. The results showed that public perception related to mathematics culture was generally associated with university entrance examination and was confined to the category of school education. The in-depth interview for improvement of the public s negative perception and popularization of mathematics revealed that the improvement of math learning environment was the most fundamental policy. And we suggested that the government need to strengthen the systematic training and support of math experts. It is also necessary to reduce the distance between math and the public, and to actively use popular media such as entertainment programs and dramas for the utilization of mathematics in daily life.
