관광영어(통역)학과 폐과의 원인과 시사점

국문 초록

본 연구는 4년제 관광영어(통역)학과의 수가 최근 감소한 원인을 분석하고 학과 발전 방향을 제시한다. 관광영어(통역)은 특수목적영어의 한 분야이며, 지속적인 말차례를 통역하는 대화 통역의 한 분야이기도 하다. 소수언어 사용국인 우리나라에서 관광 산업에서 관광영어(통역)학과는 관광 분야의 실무형 인재를 양성한다는 점에서 그 중요성이 크다. 따라서 관광영어(통역)학과의 운영상의 실패 원인과 해결책을 모색하는 것은 의미가 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내 취업사이트 4곳의 ‘관광영어통역’과 ‘영어통역’ 직무군에 게시된 취업 공고를 8주간 수집, 분석해 다음과 같은 시사점을 도출하였다. 첫째, 관광영어통역 직무들은 일반적으로 초대졸 이상의 학력과 기본적 영어 실력을 요구하고 있어, 4년제 관광통역학과가 양성하는 인력의 역량과 시장 수요는 불일치한다. 둘째, 수업 방식에 있어 관광영어(통역)학과는 원어민 교수에 의한 회화 수업 일변도에서 벗어나, 외국어 활용을 다른 영역과 접목한 실습 위주의 컨버젼스 교육을 실시하고 인턴 제도를 활성화해야 한다. 셋째, 관광영어(통역)학과는 그동안 간과되어 왔던 번역을 포함해 전반적인 통번역 과목을 강화하고, 학제적 접근을 통해 마케팅, 국제회의 기획, IT활용 등의 과목도 개설해 교과목을 다변화해야 한다.

영문 초록

The study analyzed why tourism English (interpreting) departments at universities have recently closed down and what directions the remaining schools have to take in the future. Teaching tourism English (interpreting) has great significance in Korea’s hospitality industry, as Korean is not a global language. However, many of the relevant departments have came to a closure, although they have strived to nurture talents who could work in the industry right after graduation. Therefore, it is meaningful to identify the reasons for the failure and propose viable solutions. To this end, the study collected for eight weeks the job announcements posted under the job families of “tourism English interpreting” and “English interpreting” on the nation’s four major job-search websites. Implications of the data analysis were as follows: First, four-year university graduates majoring in tourism English (interpreting) tend to be overqualified, as most tourism English interpreting jobs seek to hire two-year community college graduates with basic English skills. Second, tourism English (interpreting) departments are advised to break away their focus on conversation classes taught by native speakers. Instead, they are recommended to open convergence courses, which combine English with other skills, and facilitate internship to allow students to practice using English. Third, the departments need to strengthen interpreting and translation courses, and take an interdisciplinary approach to diversify their courses to include marketing and MICE.
