페터 바이스의 중기 연극과 68운동의 현재성

국문 초록

이 글은 ‘68운동’(68er Bewegung) 50주년을 맞이하여 ‘60년대’의 시대정신에 비추어 독일 극작가 페터 바이스(Peter Weiss)의 연극들을 조명하고자 한다. 여기에는 단순히 68운동을 ‘기억’하는 데서 그치지 않고 그 사건이 우리에게 갖는 의미를 ‘현재화’(Aktualisierung)하고자 하는 의도를 바탕에 깔고 있다. ‘68운동’은 자본주의든 사회주의든 일체의 사회적/ 개인적 억압들을 일소하고 총체적 자유와 해방을 쟁취하고자 한 정치적 사회운동인 동시에 의식혁명을 목표로 한 문화운동이다. 특히 그것은 ‘현실사회주의’로 퇴행하고만 과거 혁명에 대한 반성이기도 하다. 서구 연극계는 정치적 요구들과 예술적 실험을 일치시켜야 한다는 요청에 적극 화 답한다. 이는 1920년대 역사적 아방가르드와 정치적 전위운동의 한계를 극복하고 그 둘을 일치시키고자 했던 68운동의 맥락에서 그 의미를 도출할 수 있다. 젊은 연극인들은 현실의 시대적 요청을 담지 못하는 기성세대의 연극언어를 청산하고자 한다. 그들은 엘리트 관객만을 위한 연극제도에 반발하며 시민을 만나러 거리와 광장으로 나아간다. 특히 우리는 5ㆍ60년대 보수적인 사회 분위기 속에서 잊혀 가던 유럽 아방가르드 예술운동과 브레히트(B. Brecht)의 정치극이 다시 현실로 소환되는 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 페터 바이스 역시 60년대의 대안적 연극운동들에 큰 관심을 갖는다. 그는 당시의 공연들에서 ‘연극성’과 ‘정치성’의 생산적 결합 가능성을 엿본다. 아방가르드 연극과 정치극의 동행이라는 60년대 문화적 지향은 예술적 대안과 변혁의 이념적 좌표를 찾으려는 바이스의 끈질긴 노력들 하나하나에 뚜렷한 인장을 남긴다. 이 논문에서는 60년대의 정치ㆍ문화적 지형 안에서 바이스의 연극이 68의 지향 과 공명하는 바를 짚어보고자 한다. 페터 바이스의 중기 연극 세 편에 등장하는 인물들의 담화를 통해 변혁의 시대를 사는 지식인과 권력의 문제를 살펴본다. 혁명에 실제로 참여했던 이들 지식인/예술가들의 대화를 통해 우리는 68혁명의 이념이 ‘지금 여기’의 우리에게 던지는 의미와 교훈을 복기할 수 있다. 역사적 사실과 기록에 바탕을 둔 극중 인물들의 발언은 21세기 ‘지금 여기’로 넘나드는 작품형식을 통해서 68의 이념을 성찰하게 하는 촉매이다. 1968년으로부터 반세기를 지나 우리는 다시 바이스를 통해 지옥이 없는 평화로운 세상을 상상한다.

영문 초록

This article aims to illuminate the plays of the German playwright Peter Weiss in light of the age of the ‘60s’ in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the ‘68 movement’. The ‘68 Movement’ is a political and social movement aimed at revolution of consciousness. In many capitalist countries, struggles against dictatorships, state repression, and colonization were also marked by protests in 1968, in the socialist countries there were also protests against lack of freedom of speech and violation of other civil rights by the Communist bureaucratic and military elites. Peter Weiss has a great interest in alternative theatrical experiments, which he sympathizes with the ideas and ideals of the 68 movement. Especially, the cultural orientation of the avant-garde theater and political theater in the sixties towards the coordination and solidarity leaves a distinct imprint on Weiss’s persistent efforts to find the ideological coordinates of artistic alternatives and social changes. The artistic novelty and radicality of the dramatic form, and the multi-layered polyphony of the dramatic structure coincide with the direction of the 68 movement that pursued the unification of ‘resistance’ and ‘aesthetics’. In the context of the ‘60s’ efforts to read can gain legitimacy. In this sense, the attempt of this thesis to read Weiss’ 3 plays in the context of the ‘60s’ can gain legitimacy. This paper attempts to derive the problem of intellectuals and power in the era of radical reformation through the dialogues of characters in Peter Weis’ midterm theaters. Through the conversations of these intellectuals-artists who actually participated in the revolution, we can discover the lessons that the idea of the 68 movement gives us in ‘now and here’.
