사별여성의 전환과 적응에 대한 사례연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 배우자의 죽음을 경험한 여성의 ‘전환’와 ‘적응’ 과정을 탐색한 사례 연 구이다. 이를 위해 사별 중년여성 다섯 명을 연구 대상자로 선정하여 그들의 경험을 Mezirow(1981)의 전환학습 과정으로 살펴봄과 동시에 사별 후 삶의 적응 과정을 사 회적응 이론에 입각하여 연구하였다. 연구결과 여성은 중년기 배우자의 죽음 앞에서 1) 혼란과 딜레마를 경험하였고, 2) 죄의식을 느끼기고, 타인의 경험을 공유하며 비 슷한 처지에 공함하는 모습을 보였으며, 3) 대안을 탐색하고 활동 계획을 수립하며 4) 새로운 역할을 위해 도전하고 실천하며 5) 마침내 새로운 관점에 의해 조정되고 자신의 삶을 재통합하는 과정을 거치며 전환학습의 과정을 통해 새롭게 적응해 나 가는 모습을 보였다. 이 가운데 성인의 ‘학습경험’과 함께 ‘동성자녀’와의 관계맺음과 정서적 지지가 적응에 있어 긍정적 기재로 작용함을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이를 통해 더할 나위 없는 고통을 안긴 ‘배우자 사별’이라는 생활 사건을 직면한 여성 개인 뿐 아니라, 사회적으로도 그 부작용을 최소화 하고 적응과 삶의 재균형에 있어 시사점 을 제공하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study is a case study, exploring the process of ‘transformation’ and ‘social adaptation’ of bereaved women. By selecting five middle-aged bereaved women as subjects, I looked into their experiences with the process of transformative learning (Mezirow, 1981) as well as studied the process of adaptation to their lives after death of their spouses on the base of the social adaptation theory. As a result of the study, the bereaved women confronting death of spouse 1) experienced confusion and dilemma; 2) felt guilty, shared experiences of others, and showed the empathy to similar situation; 3) searched for alternatives and established action plans; 4) challenged for a new role and practiced; and 5) finally through the process of transformative learning, being adjusted by a new perspective and reintegrating their lives, showed adaptation. ‘Adult learning’ and relationship with and emotional support by their ‘daughters’ can be seen as a positive base effect to their adaptation. Through this study I would like to minimize the side effects to the society as well as individuals who face ‘death of spouse’ and provide suggestions about social adaptation and re-balancing in their lives.
