遠藤周作は『わたしが·棄てた·女』という作品は‘新約聖書の物語構造をそのまま作品の中で使った’ものと語ったことがある。そして作品の人物像とイエスのイメージという‘ダブルイメージ’がこの作品の底辺にあるとも言った。これはこの作品の主人公であるミツの人物像をただイエスとの関連で捉えるところにとどまることなく、もっと新訳聖書のイエスのイメージの多様さを前提にして捉えてほしいという作品読解においての要請でもある。本稿はこのような作者の要請に答えて、新約聖書の物語構造に即して、ミツを中心とした作品の人物像の理解を深めることに力点をおいた。このためにまず、この作品の制作に当たって遠藤が一番重く受け止めていると思われる聖書個所を調べて、新訳聖書の物語に表れる四つのイエス像を特定した。それは、第一、みすぼらしい格好の人、第二、棄てられた人、第三、苦しみの人、悲しみの人、第四、苦しみを背負う人である。そして、このような四つのイエス像のイメージが、作品の中、特にミツにどのような過程を経て投影されていくのかを分析した。このような分析を通して、ミツへの理解の幅がもっと深められ、苦しみの時代に慰めの役割を果たす遠藤文学への可能性が再確認できたと思われる。

영문 초록

Shusaku Endo has once stated that he utilized a biblical narrative structure in his work, Watashi-gaSutetaOnna, and that what underlies this literary work was the so-called “double image” consisting of the image of the characters of the work and the image of Christ. This not only means that the image of the main character of the work, Mitsu, is construed in connection with Christ but also requires that the readers capture the image of Mitsu by considering various images of Christ in The New Testament. In this article, we address this author’s requirement by investigating the images of the main figures (especially, Mitsu) based on the narrative structure of The New Testament. For this purpose, we analyze the part of The New Testament that seems to have affected Endo’s work significantly, and specifies four images of Christ that appear in the story of the Book. These images are: (i) person with shabby clothes, (ii) person dumped, (iii) person of pain and sorrow, and (iv) person who comes to terms with pain. We then analyze the way in which these images of Christ are projected onto the story (especially, Mitsu). Through this analysis, we enhance the understanding of Mitsu and confirm the potential that the Endo literature has to serve as a comfort during the era of pain.
