심재 조긍섭의 시 인식 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 근대 전환기 深齋 曺兢燮(1873~1933)의 시 인식을 살펴보고 이를 통해 이 시기 한시사를 새로운 각도에서 조망함을 목적으로 한다. 심재는 『詩經』과 杜甫를 시의 전범으로 재천명했다. 그는 『시경』을 인륜을 담은 노래로 받아들였고, 두보 시에 대해서는 도덕 교육적 가치를 부각하여 『시경』시와 같은 지위를 부여했다. 또 이런 관점에 입각해 중국과 우리나라 역대 시를 평가하기도 했다. 그의 도덕주의적 발언은 상당히 완고하고 강화된 형태를 띠고 있다. 그러나 이는 전통의 무비판적 답습이 아니라, 위기의 현실에 대한 절박한 인식에 기초한 자각적 노력이었다. 예술 정신의 발휘에 대한 관심은 도덕주의적 관점과 대조되어 흥미를 일으킨다. 그는 文은 반드시 質을 따라서 나온다는 文必隨質論을 펼쳤다. 또 理ㆍ文의 분리에 문제를 제기하고, 문은 추구해야 할 마땅한 가치가 있는 것이라는 인식을 명확히 했다. 『시경』과 두보 시를 언어 예술의 관점에서 감상하고, 시의 음악성, 시적 재능과 意境, 문학의 매력 등 시의 언어 예술로서의 측면에 관한 논의를 여럿 남긴 것은 이런 인식 위에서 가능했다. 도덕주의적 발언과 예술 정신의 발휘가 교통되는 현장이 바로 당대 시 비평이다. 그는 滄江 金澤榮의 神韻에 대해서는 호의적이었으나 다른 시인들의 性靈論에 대해서는 비판적 입장을 취했다. 그렇다고 신운 자체를 전적으로 긍정한 것은 아니었다. 그는 志가 확립된 뒤에 신운을 붙여야 하고, 平淡 속에서 신운을 추구해야 한다고 주장했다. 창강의 風神變化를 찬상하면서도 기이함이나 기교에 빠질까 걱정하며 '華를 거두고 實로 돌아갈 것'을 권했다. 심재는 전통의 자각적 계승자이면서 새롭고 기이한 경향에 대한 조정자로서 자신의 시대에 필요한 자신의 역할을 수행했다. 그는 한쪽으로 치우치기 일쑤인 시단에 道ㆍ文의 조화로운 통합을 과제로 제시하고, 특히 당대 대표적인 시인들과의 관계 속에서 동의ㆍ용인ㆍ견제ㆍ비판의 역할을 수행함으로써 근대 전환기 한시사를 풍부하고 균형 있게 구성하는 데 기여한 인물로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This research aimed to view the history of Sino-Korean Poetry from a new angle by reviewing the perception of the poetry by Simjae(深齋) Cho Geung-seop(曺兢燮, 1873~1933) in the transition period to modern era. Simjae reaffirmed the Sigyeong(詩經) and Dubo(杜甫) as a model for this poetry. He took the Sigyeong as a song for humanity and granted the same status as the Sigyeong to the poetry by Dubo by adding the ethical and educational value on the poetry. He also evaluated the poetry of all times in China and Korea from such aspects. His ethical remarks are in a considerably stubborn and consolidated form. However, this is not an uncritical following of the tradition but a conscious effort based on a desperate awareness of the reality faced with him. His concern for showing the artistic spirit draws interests in contrast to the moral perspective. He claimed the Munpilsujillon(文必隨質論) that mun(文) should be different depending on its jil(質). He also raised questions about the separation between ri(理) and mun(文) and made clear the perception that literature deserves its value. It was possible to appreciate the Sigyeong and poetry by Dubo from a linguistic and artistic perspective, and have some discussions over the linguistic and artistic aspects of the poetry including musicality of the poetry, poetical talent, uigyeong(意境) and charms of literature based on such perceptions. It is reviewing the poetry of the time when ethical remarks and artistic spirits are communicated. He was favorable to the sinun(神韻) of Changgang(滄江) Kim Taek-yeong(金澤榮) but took a critical attitude on seongnyeongnon(性靈論) of other poets. That didn't necessarily mean that he was completely positive on the sinun itself. He argued to put the sinun after establishing the ji(志) and pursue the sinun in pyeongdam(平淡). This shows that he regarded the integrated pursuing of do(道) and mun(文) as ideal in the poetry and prose. Simjae suggested a harmonious integration between do(道) and mun(文) in the poetical circle that is likely to be biased, and particularly made contributions to make the history of Sino-Korean Poetry more abundant and tense in the transition period to modern era by playing the role of agreement, approval, check and criticism within the relationship with the representative poets of the times. In this regard, it is possible to say that he played his role very diligently appropriate for his times as a subjective successor of the tradition and an arbitrator of the new and bizarre tendency.
