국문 초록

심산 김창숙은 일제에 항거하다 급서한 해사 김정호의 묘갈명인 <海史金公墓碣銘>을 쓰면서 파리장서가 작성되는 경위를 적어놓았다. <海史金公墓碣銘>을 보면, 파리장서 작성에 대하여 퇴계학통인 면우 곽종석은 흔쾌하게 찬동한 반면 율곡학통인 간재 전우는 상당히 비판적 입장을 지닌 것으로 묘사되고 있다. 해방 이후 간재의 문인들은 이 글을 두고서 심산을 매우 과격한 어조로 비난하였다. 이른바 독립에 미온적 입장을 견지한 것으로 간재를 묘사함으로써 선사를 모독하였다는 것이다. 이후 심산과 간재 문인들 사이에는 날 선 비난과 비방이 오고가면서 서로간의 화기를 크게 손상시켰다. 이 논쟁은 조선의 전통유교지식인이 일제시기를 어떻게 대처해 나갔느냐 하는 전형적 양상의 구현과 그것이 충돌한 결과라고 할 수 있다. 여기에는 일보의 양보가 있을 수 없었다. 물러나는 순간 자신의 존재근거를 부정하는 결과를 낳을 수 있기 때문이다. 유학의 도와 국가의 존망이라는 양대 가치에 대한 우열의 의식이 간재와 심산의 사이에 선명하게 나눠진다. 외세를 앞에 놓고 갈려진 이 양자의 차이는 바로 일제하 유교지식인의 전형적 초상이었던 것이다.

영문 초록

Simsan Kim Chang-suk gave an exact description about the process of writing 'A Long Letter to Paris (A joint petition to the international peace conference in Paris)' in his <海史金公墓碣銘>, an epitaph about Haesa Kim Jeong-ho who resisted against Japanese occupation of Korea and died suddenly. In an epitaph about Haesa Kim Jeong-ho, he described that Ganje Jeon-u who belonged to the school of Yulgok quite disapproved about writing 'A Long Letter to Paris' whereas Myeonu Gwak Jong-suk who belonged to the school of Toegye willingly approved it. After Korean independence, the disciples of Ganje condemned harshly Simsan on this epitaph. They considered that he insulted their master by describing Ganje adhered to, what is called, an indulgent attitude to Korean independence. Cruel condemnation and slanders among the disciples of Simsan and Ganje greatly damaged a friendly relationship between them. This debate shows the conflicts between scholars on perceiving about how the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty coped with the Japanese colonial period. There should be no concession on their positions since it could cause denying their beings once they took steps back from their stances. There is a clear division between Simsan and Ganje on two critical values; the teaching of Confucianism and the ultimate fate of the nation. The difference between their positions on foreign imperialism reveals typical attitudes of Confucian scholars under Japanese colonial rule.
