국어 부정극어의 허가 영역과 통사 구조의 해석

국문 초록

부정극어의 허가 영역에 관한 논의에서는 절 경계를 분석하는 것과 단형과 장형의 부정 방식에서 기인하는 부정 영역의 차이를 고려하는 것이 중요한 문제다. 그러나 이전의 논의에서는 이들 문제에 대한 면밀한 고려가 없거나 부족했다. 그 결과 접속문과 내포문에서 부정극어의 허가 영역이 제대로 규명되지 못했다고 할 수 있다. 이전의 논의에서 국어 부정극어 허가 영역과 관련하여 동일절 조건이 지켜지지 않는 것으로 인식된 경우가 있으나 본고의 입장은 이와 다르다. 또한 그간의 논의에서 부정극어 허가 영역과 관련하여 직관상의 문제와 관련된 문제가 있었으며, 부정극어의 다양한 복문 구조에 대한 전반적인 검토도 미흡했다. 따라서 본고에서는 국어 부정문의 부정 방식과 부정 영역에 기초하여 접속문, 명사절 내포문, 보조동사 구문, 장형 사동문, 부정 상승 구문, 명사구 부가어절을 가진 계사 구문, 비명시적 부정극어 허가자 구문 등 여러 가지 복문 구성에서 부정극어 허가 영역을 논의했다. 이를 통해 국어의 다양한 복문 구조에서 모두 동일절 조건을 준수하는 것으로 확인되었다. 표면상 상이한 절에 속하는 부정어가 다른 절에 속하는 부정극어를 허가하는 것으로 보이나 부정의 영역을 고려하여 문장 구조를 분석하면 동일절 조건으로 분석되며 절 경계가 분명하지 않은 구문의 경우 부정어와 부정극어가 상이한 절에 속해 있는 것처럼 보이지만 이때도 상위절 본동사와 하위절 동사가 한 단위로 재구조화되어 부정극어를 허가한다고 할 수 있으므로 동일절 조건을 준수한다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In this paper I attempted to explore the scope in which NPIs(negative polarity items) are licensed in Korean bi-clausal structures. It is well known that NPI must be licensed only by a negative element in the same clause. There are two types of negation, short form and long form in Korea. The long form is different from the short one in that the former has ambiguity and affirmative presupposition. Therefore we must discuss the licensing scope of NPIs through the long form negation. In this paper I examined the licensing scope of NPIs of various bi-clausal sentences. In conjoined sentences, even though the NPI and negative exist in different clauses on the surface, the sentences are grammatical. It is due to the negation method of long form. It shows the wide scope of negation in these cases and it can be interpreted that NPI and negative are in the same clause. So the clause-mate condition is observed. And I examined the licensing scope of NPI in complex sentences which has embedded NP-clause, VP-clauses and in negative raising sentences, auxiliary verb sentences, negative copula sentences, and in sentences which has unexplicit NPI licensors. In conclusion it was confirmed that almost all the complex sentences keep the clause-mate condition. It appears that some sentence types do not observe this condition. But in these cases, the preceding and accompanying verbs are reconstructed and function as a verb. I concluded that in Korean all the NPIs must be placed in the clause in which the negative exists.
