국문 초록

  일제는 조선을 식민지로 병탄한 뒤, 우리의 민족정신을 말살하고 조선인의 愚民化 劣等化를 획책하는 식민지 교육을 강제하였다. 그에 비례하여 조선인의 저항적인 抗日 민족교육도 활발히 전개되었는데, 그 하나의 주요 산실이 바로 전통적인 童蒙교육기관 書堂이었다.
  일제강점기에도 서당에서 읽는 교과서는 이전처럼 『千字文』이 제일 으뜸이었다. 민족주의 교육이념 아래 전통의 서당교육을 견지하려는 지식인들은 『천자문』의 이러한 교육적 효용성을 활용하고자, 난해한 천자문 을 아동이 읽기 쉽도록 개조 변형시킨 ‘里千字類’ 漢字 학습서들을 계속 편찬해내었다. 小岡 金泰麟(1869～1927)의 『童蒙須讀千字文』 역시 자주독립의 민족의식을 고취하려는 궁극적인 목표 아래, 동몽에게 보다 긴요하고 평이한 字學書가 되도록 재편집된 里千字類의 하나이다.
  저자 김태린은 남인학맥을 전수받은 성리학자요, 巴里長書에 서명한 애국지사로서, 침략적인 서구 근대문명을 배격하고 조선의 유구한 주자성리학을 최고의 가치로 존숭하였던 구한말 영남의 재야 儒林이다. 근대사회로의 이행이라는 시대적 변혁기에 임해서도 소강 김태린은 성리학적 傳統에로의 복귀야말로 민족독립과 自存自强을 일궈낼 先鞭이 되리라 생각하였다. 그의 저술 『동몽수독천자문』은 저자의 이런 시대 인식과 학문 경향에 기반을 두고 민족교육의 일환으로 성립된 아동용 학습교재이다.
  이 책은 綱目의 개념을 도입하여, 40綱의 상위 조목을 두고 그 아래 細目 1,000자를 類별로 분류하여 배속시켰다. 40조목은 天地의 간단한 원리와 특성, 인간의 형체와 질병, 성품과 지위, 의식주와 주변의 각종물건, 윤리와 올바른 학문, 여러 동ㆍ식물류로 일별할 수 있다. 이 책은 조목에서부터 주변적이고 일상적인 한자교육을 표방한 것이다. 또 1,000자 중 약 700자를 『천자문』에 없는 구체적ㆍ실용적 글자들로 대체하고, 句義보다는 글자 하나하나의 字意에 치중하여, 문자 학습서로서의 평이함을 우선적으로 추구하였다. 『동몽수독『천자문』』은 쉽고도 요긴한 漢字ㆍ漢文교육을 통해 전통사상과 문화를 일깨우고, 그로 인해 민족정신의 앙양과 조선 독립의 밑거름이 되고자 했기 때문이다.

영문 초록

  Japanese Imperialism got a colonial education to efface the national spirit to Korean in order to rule the colony without difficulty after amalgamating Korea by force. A national education against this colonial education also flourished, especially a village school(書堂), an traditionally educational institution of children.
  The primary textbook of a village school was Thousand-Character(千字文) not only in the Joseon Dynasty period but also under the rule of Japanese imperialism. Many Korean intellectuals compiled study books of Chinese Character, which a difficult Thousand-Character was changed into a easy textbook for children, to maintain the educational principle of nationalism. Sogang(小岡) Kim Taelin(金泰麟)"s Dongmongsudok Thousand-Character(童蒙須讀千字文) also was a easy self-study book for children with the ultimate end to arouse national consciousness.
  Kim Taelin was a Neo-Confucian in the line of the Namin school, a patriot who took part in event which was found out the petition for the independence of Korea in Paris(巴里長書事件), and a Confucian scholar out of office who rejected Western civilization but worshiped Juza-Neo-Confucianism(朱子性理學). He regarded returning to Confucian tradition as the best policy for national liberation and self-reliance. His Dongmongsudok Thousand-Character reflected his thought well.
  This book included 1,000 characters under 40 items. 40 items consisted of heaven and earth, human bodies and diseases, human nature and positions, food, clothing and shelter, ethics and a good knowledge, and animal and plant, etc. The particular features of it was claiming to stand for an actual, microscopic, experiential, and practical study of Chinese Character and changing 700 out of 1,000 into new characters which was not included in Thousand-Character.
  It was similar to Comment on Thousand-Character(註解千字文) in showing the reading and the meaning of Chinese character in Korean. While the latter interpreted a sentence, the former commented a word one by one, for it aimed at a easy and simple book as a study book.
  In conclusion, Dongmongsudok Thousand-Character was not merely a study book for children but work which aimed at forming the groundwork for the independence of Korea, restoring a traditional culture and arousing a national consciousness.
